I got exactly what Bbasso got, but only 106,000 miles. I have the added benefit of free, she [a client] literally gave me her Jeep because she was getting on in years and didn't trust it anymore. It had left her stranded a couple times (CPS) and her brother couldn't figure out what it was so he replaced the starter and ignition module, cap and rotor, O2 sensors, and spark plugs... leaving me with just the true culprit. Sure, there were some things that needed attention but in the past year I've invested less that $250 in maintenance and repair and it is currently perfect... everything works and works well, except for the headlights and saggy leafs, which suck but that's pretty much the case with all stock XJs. I trust that it will take me where I want to go and get me home with little or no drama.
I am very, very grateful.

I inherited a stock xj full of dog hair with 4 mismatched and bald 215's, sagging leaf springs, finicky wiring, blown rear brake cylinders, and rusted rear lower 1/4's (just found that out when I removed the bumper end caps ).

I got mine from my wife's dad (notice I didn't say my father in law, we don't talk to him anymore). We payed $1700 for it. According to the title place the blue book value was $1250.
All stock '96 xj w/ 220,000 miles
We inherited:
Interior
Blown speakers,
Trashed out duraband radio, installed a JVC radio
6 disc changer that doesn't work
Head liner was held up with staples
Badly stained seats from and back
Intermittent wipers doesn't work
Carpet that hasn't been cleaned in 10 years
Torn up door seals
Exterior
Rusted hood
Surface scratches
Minor dints all the way around
Dinted bumpers
Everything else
Engine rebuilt at 110,000 miles
Blown head gasket
Small Leak in radiator ( it evaped as soon as it came out) Changed it when it left me on the side of the road one day with an unfixable leak.
Bad motor mount, fixed
Leaking bushing in tail housing for drive shaft yolk, fixed
Broke transmission mount, fixed
Leaking trans but have yet to find the leak
all steering linkage needs to be changed
All shocks and suspension is shot (left front is a little lower than the right. The rear springs are arched)
Bad bearings in rear end
Rims has been neglected for probably 10 years from the looks of them ( they are either pitted or stained really bad. When I clean them they look like they have black raindrops on them)
A gas tank with black algae and rust ( after 2 bottles of seafoam 4 bottles of fuel treatment and
6 filters the algae is gone. Hopefully.)
Theres more but I can't remember everything that is wrong with it unless I'm looking it over.
When probs started showing up I would call my wife's dad for help. He would give me the run a round with it and say I don't know why Your having probs it ran fine when we had it. After the 3rd time calling and him telling me that we just stopped talking to him. So I started looking it over and found a butt load of things wrong with it.

6" of lift, a blown rear end, HORRIBLE wiring, a pair of vice grips holding the clutch pedal together that I'm now using as a foot peg for when the doors are off, a 1/2" wrench at the bottom of the radiator support, most of a clothes hanger holding the broken right rear shock away from the tire, and an assortment of screws, bolts, and Allen wrenches scattered all about the interior.

Boy he didn't do you two (especially his own daughter) any favors. That is so sad! I can see why you don't speak to him.
