It's funny you said that about buying from someone that did not maintain it. I don't believe the guy I got it from kept it maintained. I had to put a new transmission in it shortly after I bought it. It seems like one thing after another with the Heep.
I hate for both of us but you made me feel better by saying all of what you said.

Im glad you didnt think I was being rude. Its just like any other car. A lot of times you get a bad one. Maybe whoever you sell it to will not mind fixing and tinckering with it to get away from his wife. If this was my only car I would have no choice but to but another one as this one just has way too many hickups. On the other hand about six years ago I had a 98 XJ from a local police dept and that was very reliable. I did sell it like an idiot because I wanted a YJ, but almost immediatly realized that was a HUGE mistake. Good luck. Dont get attached to things that treat you badly.

Hard to say, but remember the devil you know is preferrable to the devil you don't. Anytime you buy a used car there will be issues. If you are able to do repairs yourself you're ahead of the game.

If I was to get another one I would take my time shopping around for one.

I have thought about that for sure. My biggest problem is lack of time to fix all this stuff. I travel a lot for my job so that leaves limited time to make all the repairs. It would take me a while to fix everything that needs fixing and when I think about it it seems overwhelming and I am like screw it.

That's the thing with buying an old XJ...it really is a project, no matter your intentions. I have a '98 with the same problem--heater core slightly leaking, not in cab, but sometimes get a coolant smell. It clogs up from the previous owner putting stop leak in, which I'm still cleaning up over a year later. A/C leaks, pretty sure it's the evap. I can recharge it and it might last a week. I just need to take a weekend with lots of beer and replace both of them.

Well this is where I am at. If I can get a decent price for the Jeep then I will sell it but I won't give it away because I have too much invested. I will take a little loss but not much.
If I don't get any interests in it then I will just start fixing all the things that need to be fixed when I get back from work. Once I start fixing the heep, it will be off the market because at that point I might as well keep it because it will be practically brand new when I am done.
Things I am fixing to do to it if it does not sell:
New heater core
New a/c system
New fuel pump (to eliminate poor mans prime)
Durango steering box upgrade
Rear main seal
Valve cover gasket

411 views of my heep for sale and no interest so I might as well go ahead and fix everything and keep it. At least I know what all has been done.
I need opinions on best heater core for the buck and evaporator core as well. I am only tearing the dash out once so I want to replace with quality long lasting parts.
