Wouldn't really go for an SUV if I didnt go for the cherokees. I always had Chevy trucks and tahoes before so I'd probably go with a 95-99 silverado. But I have an xj so who needs em!

Honestly, if I couldn't have an XJ I'd probably go with a first gen Subaru Forester to be honest. Reliable, and they can actually handle a small obstacle trail without issue while being an excellent DD.
For a trail vehicle though it's be a first gen Trooper with the diesel.
