Search hard and long you will find a better deal.
I searched for months and came across a guy selling a 99 with 178k ot it. High milage but he only wanted 1500 for it and he said need to get rid of it ASAP. Went to go look at it it was in good shape need a few things not too much tho. The paint was not so great but I could live with it. So I said to my self he needs to get rid of it asap offer 1000. He said ok... got the jeep, put a good set of tires and a few maintenance items on it. It my daily now ive been on long trips thru winter storms etc etc, runs like a top for a grand.
Look at craigs list often as possible people will put up things for sale at ridiculously low prices and if you catch them right away you can ****** them up.

i low balled a guy once who was selling a 97 XJ 2 door, black, 5spd at a dealer once...i drove by it all the time in my semi, but never the jeeps, so one day i just pulled the semi in there and looked at it...it had a 3.5 inch lift, bald Truxs MTs, rino lined interior...no fender flares, 150k miles, scratches all over the place, a couple dents where one would get dents from tree limbs while on the trail...same with the scratches, they were the kind you get from driving thru brush...
well i could tell it had been wheeled, and quite frankly i didnt think it was worth the 2500 he was asking...so i asked him if it was wheeled before it reached the dealer lot...he says "oh no, this has NEVER been off road before..they guy never took it off road...i know the guy and hes never 4-wheeled it"...lol...so since he lied to me, i low balled him
i offered him 1500 cash on the spot...
he goes, no no, i cant take that, this is to nice of a jeep..blah blah blah....granted, i did like it, but it wasnt worth 2500, and he was lying to me...i told him before i left to be careful the next time he trys to lie to some one about it never being offroad...i told him this
"you dont take the fender flares clean off if you dont wheel it...you dont rino line the interior if you dont wheel it...the scratches were caused from offroad use...
i got back in my truck and drove off...he still denied that it was ever wheeled...

If the body is very clean I would consider 2500.00
check and see how much the windshield will cost to replace, pull that from the 3K
trunk shocks will run u less then 50.00 for the pair.. so thats no biggie...

You must of missed the post that said he'll take 2k for it, I just dont know if hes pushing it because its a POS or he really needs money. I will go see it on Fri. and see for sure but I'm still skeptical.
LOL I wouldn't offer him more when he asked less, the funny thing is he posted with 2700 than 2 days later with 3k and now he will drop what I'd pay for it. Just fishy to me.

On CL it says he needs the money for school but why would you drop a new engine in it that only has 65 miles on it, as he says and then get rid of it if there was nothing else wrong with it? If I had just dropped a new engine in something I would probably keep it for awhile to get my moneys worth out of it at least. Just my 2 cents.

[QUOTE=DsmGuy;456088]I know I've been posting here and there about XJ's and if they are good deals, but I just dont want to regret the deal I make.
http://detroit.craigslist.org/wyn/cto/1622797753.html
Its got 200k on the body and 65k on motor with receipt, how legit would a receipt be to tell if it really has low miles? I know to look for leaks and rust and just the entire condition of body but what are some specifics to XJ, I should check out when I go see this XJ? Is it worth 3k obo, KBB has it at 2k with 200k miles and 3300 with 65k miles so I'm maybe looking at offering 2500? does it sound like a good price? Thx for your time guys, I appreciate helping me being closer to my damn XJ, [/QUT
Take a look at the pic. it has a Euro light on the fender and it looks like a euro plate on the front. i don't think that's a real pic of the jeep.

Thank you guys for those points, look at a better one I guess. I knew I came to the right place for Q's.

First, of course, pop the hood and look for any "wet spots"
because it is a newer engine then hopefully it wont have any.
also make sure all of the components are there. I looked at a truck once and it was missing an air filter and a couple of other things.
Another thing, because it has so many miles on the body, take a look at the u-joints. give them a "little shake" and see if they are loose. Check the suspension. look for "sagging" springs, leaky shocks or wear areas that may be rubbing.
Look under the jeep for anything hanging! and of course for any leaks! Ask to see where it is parked daily.
these are all great bargaining opportunities.
Take it for a test drive, make sure you take it on the freeway or somewhere you can pick up speed, and keep the radio off. Listen for rattles or odd noises. Before you take it out make sure to check all the lights including blinkers and emergency lights. also great bargaining tools.
If all this seems to be overall decent or great, I personally would offer $2500 but you can try $2000. Most times people selling cars will ask about $500 more than what they really want for the car, especially when they say OBO.
Hope this helps!
