Will I get seriously flamed and shamed for saying that so far in the snow and ice I've had good luck with the dreaded/hated "GY Wranglers" ??
LOL

there are multiple articles that explain why mud tires don't do well in snow. But just a spark notes version: the lug blocks are much larger with more surface area that don't lend themselves well to winter conditions, tread compound, and probably most important is that they do not have nearly enough siping. Lots of mud tires don't even have siping. Tread pattern isn't all that big of a deal, it does contribute, but it's not a top reason.

perhaps You are just a good, seasoned driver in the snow. But all terrains would probably aid you more. And for your average driver, mud tires should not be a preferred choice for winter.

I have ran all terrains in the winter and they did fine also. On my jeep mud tires is all I will use. I like to be able to use my Jeep as a Jeep and snow or all tearrain tires don't do very good off road around here, we have a lot of slick clay.

that's fine. I use my jeep as a jeep too. But all terrains are needed since they do better on more terrain then mt's, and around me you can do a whole mess of differrent types of wheeling on differrent terrains. Plus to get to all the areas, you have a travel, and they last longer haha...it's all preference like anything else out there

It's funny, -everyone- up here runs MTs (because....jeep). Though there is very little, if any, opportunity for the average person to use them for what they are designed. But we deal with heavy snow and ice 5 months of the year. Nothing like a 3000lb vehicle sitting on 12" wide MTs for snow and ice. lol.

and how is their driving haha... you gotta pull them out of snow banks?...honestly, mud tires aren't horrible for winter, but they definitely lower on the totem pole of what majority of drivers should be running.

exactly. firestone destination M/T = slick like traction, unless you stud them.

goodyear MTR, much better, due to the siping. but still a mud tire.

duratrac is a pretty good tire for winter, but it's the smooth shiny snow that will get you every time. deep snow, mud tires tend to do ok, but once you get back out on the highway, forgettaboutit

you don't have to tell me, i've used every mud tire under the sun in winter...

as firebane said, they don't stay soft. trust me, it gets to -50c up here in the winter with a pretty good amount of snow and the highway is rarely clear, it's always partially snow covered. and i live on the trans canada highway.

"GY Wrangler" is vague. There are a lot of different models under than name, so you need to be more specific.

Assuming you're referring to one of the garbage models, then I would just ask what your basis for comparison is. If you've never driven for any length of time in winter on a significantly better tire, then I wouldn't expect you to even know how much better your tires could be (this is the reason I HATE the way Tirerack and other sites do user reviews; people will spend their whole lives on terrible tires thinking they're fine then write 100% glowing reviews of the first mediocre tire they try thinking they stumbled upon the holy grail of traction).

Now, if you HAVE and still believe that one of the poorer Wrangler models equals or exceeds the performance of a quality winter tire in winter, then I don't know what to make of you.

Just FYI... I grew up in the snow/ice... and have many, many years of experience driving in those conditions...and have used countless different model tires over years. So yeah, I have a basis for comparison.

easy there tex..... I didn't say that I was massively impressed and think they are the answer to all things tire related. LOL.... What I mean is that I was pleasantly surprised as I was expecting them to be much, much worse. They aren't great, and there are others I would definitely prefer to have on it right now, but they did better for a crap tire then I thought they would. lol... they will still be getting swapped out for something better once I figure out how I can stuff them in there (at stock height)..without cutting.

....and the only reason they are on it now is they were from the PO and are practically new.

The closest mountain to me that gets snow is 22 miles as the Crow flies, but 40 miles by vehicle. I can see the mountain top from my windows so I will know when there is snow up there. As soon as there is snow I will give it a go. I have the old school Wranglers like in the pic below.

goodluck with that mountain with those man haha....thats one of the worst tires on the market. There was another tire thread recently that had some good discussion on them recently and why they are bad. Let me see if I find it for you.

edit: here's the thread. It deviates from the topic a bit, but the discussion is good hahah....I explain a little bit in detail about the wrangler radial in post 89
