well the 8.25 from 97+ xj's are comparable to the dana44 but the dana44 is stronger but harder to find

I will keep an eye out for one or the other. Seems like I have seen them on Craigslist but did not know what they were at the time.

What can I expect to pay for a used one?

Will the Chrysler 8.25 work out of a 96 Cherokee 2WD? I am looking at an ad on CL right now that says Chrysler 8.25 27 spline. They dont have a price listed but there is a contact number.

Well I am not into the rock climbing gig. Still need to use it as my daily driver so I don't want to make it to the point that it beats me to death going up and down the road.

I may hit the mud on occasion but not into burying it up to the doors. Light to medium off roading. Need 4WD during deer season.

I may be over thinking the whole thing. What I have may work for me just fine if I don't get too rough. But every now and then that kid inside of me rears it's ugly self!

I guess my concern is getting in a mud hole and the tires just spin, or one wheel just spins because I don't have a TRUE four wheel drive. Know what I mean?

See, that makes me feel better. My jeep has been in the south it's whole life so there is no rust on it anywhere. So no weak spots. That may or may not make any difference as far as something breaking.

Put a lunchbox locker in the front then. It will do better offroad and you will be able to keep the d35 without fear of breaking

it sure dont hurt lol but still keep an eye out for a 8.25 and youll have to take the rear driveshaft with you as well and make sure the rear axle and front axles have the same gear ratio,or youll break parts
