You damage a steel rim, and most of the time you can bend the lip back, throw some spray paint on it and your good to go.
You damage a chrome wheel, and your not going to be able to fix them, your most likely going to need a new rim.
Seems kinda dumb to put yourself in a position of potentially having to replacing a rim when you go offroad, I feel better about having a rim that I should be able to repair if it gets damaged.

I don't mind the black wheel look, but did get sick of the chrome center caps that start to rust almost as soon as they're installed.. so I added the stock caps instead
Haven't decided if I prefer the silver center on the black rim, or the flat black center..

Black Out
I used black to provide contrast and bring out the logo when reconditioning my daughters 2nd rim set. If you get em for a good price, run what ya brung, any colour is cool on an XJ. Plan to use the black and some elbow grease polish to create contrast on my 89 Turbine type stock Alum rims and have em ready to swap out in the spring. Black is a mainstay on my paint shelf.

Black steel if you really wheel is the way to go.
Steel bends (repairable on the trail, ask me how I know), Aluminum will break. Chromies although you might be able to bend em back in shape will then look like crap. I bought my most recent set of soft 8's for $100 for four (used of course) and can pick up a new one for about sixty bucks.
Common sense and economics is the reason I run black steel wheels.
