My grandfather runs a charity ministry (where used furniture is collected and donated to those who need it), and has many people volunteer to help him move furniture. One of his volunteers wanted to sell his '01 XJ, and so my grandfather put it in his newsletter. My mom saw it, and decided to check it out, since I was just about to turn 16 and get my permit. The guy came over with the XJ, and the only problems were a cracked windshield and broken A/C. He's was moving to work on Wall Street, so all he wanted was $600 for it. My mom ran inside, got me, and showed me my new Jeep.
As for money put into it:
$600 purchase
$1000 repairs
$2600 lift parts/rims/tires
TOTAL
$4200.

wished I still had my first car..

I got an XJ because I missed having a "little" SUV I could have fun with. I have been driving new trucks for years, and my fun cars were, well, CARS. I want to go offroad with something I don't have to worry about dents and scratches, so a cheap jeep was the way to go. The XJ is pretty much trail-ready out of the box and upgrades are easy and plentiful.

One reason I didn't buy an XJ. Every time I even look at a bolder the wrong way I end up with body damage. Comparably the YJs don't seem to ever get body damage... or at least not nearly as much.

I like my XJ because I picked it up from a work buddy of mine with a 3" rc on it for $200. It has been sitting for five years so I replaced most of the fuel system and most of the ignition system. Put some new tires on it and did some painting/chopping and less than 2 grand later I have a reliable and very fun vehicle. Now I'm wanting to change out some of the rc components.
Even though I bought it lifted still feel it is my own because I have done way more work in the two months I've owned it then he didn't in the 3 years he actually had it on the road.

I owned a ZJ before and I loved it, but it was not worth the money I poured into it. And to be honest, it was not fun or good looking to paint it or fix it or to do anything to change its stock image.. It was a very good vehicle nothing more.
But an XJ is a reliable friend, which has half the running and maintenance costs of a ZJ, and still yields the same amount of power if not more. Sure it doesn't have heated seats, or a soft top like a YJ, but if I wanted those I would get a Miata.

Well, it's 4wd all the time and it's a heavier vehicle. Front diff whines after 40 mph, you can change the gear set in the diff, but it's only temporary. Viscous Coupler gives up after 150k in almost every ZJ, and it's more expensive than a np231 alone. Transfer cases and the transmissions behind the v8s are just not that good. It has so many electrical equipment that can go wrong anytime, and most of these equipment doesn't even work in many ZJs already. And I love my XJ's stock bumpers, much more reliable than the plastic ZJ bumpers. They alone saved me a hundred bucks . Don't get me wrong, I loved my ZJ, but I just couldn't afford to keep it.

I bought it because walking everywhere is no fun. However as it turns out I feel I made a good choice, parts are cheap, easy to work on and a huge community of fellow xj owners out there.

The internet presence of the maintenance & repairs for the Cherokee are invalueable. My lady has a VW and it is impossible to find out information nevermind multiple tutorials depending on the depth and budget I have! It's really amazing.

I never wanted an XJ. My stepson bought a used one from his friends mother then discovered his license was suspended..The woman he bought it from had moved away so he was stuck with it and I took it off his hands because my Astro van was near death. So here I am

My friend's dad bought one a few years back. He lifted it and did a ton if mods to it and I've liked them ever since. I got my license this year and needed a practical 4 wheel drive vehicle to take on the beach and remembered my love for them.

I bought my XJ because:
I love the look both stock and lifted
Easy to work on
Price is right
Decent cargo room, especially with the seat folded down
Gets me where I want to go and where I need to go
Always wanted a Jeep
Learned how to drive a stick offroader for extra manliness cred. My beard has become more lush since I purchased my XJ.
In fact I have two XJs, one originally for parts but m'lady has laid claim. Guess I'll need a new parts Jeep lol. Future plans do include owning a classic-style Jeep, such as a CJ, YJ, or TJ.
42REs come to mind.

I was looking for a TJ but they were too much money, too noisy, and not as friendly. So I got an XJ and love it. It's been a money pit since the engine blew and now trying to work through this lift and all, but I love it still.
