Why do so many feel like their XJ gets bad gas mileage?

I just replaced the transmission fluid and filter and did a complete flush of the radiator, but still not getting any better MPG. When I first got it back in July I was getting 17 with mixed driving. The AC was broken at the time. I got it fixed now, could that be why I'm getting worse MPG?

I am not a complainer, but some may complain because they are pretty slow in stock 4.0 form and still turn out dismal mpg. I am on 33in E Loaded tires 5 in lift etc etc and I turn 12 ish so I dont mind. But in stock form I was getting maybe 15-16 mpg ( 99 aw4). My explorer had a 5.0 awd setup and I was turning out about the same as the xj, but was way faster, could actually pass on a hwy.... I do miss that pull, but I am still really happy with my jeep.

Hell yes the XJ gets horrible MPG. A vehicle that size with no more HP than a 4.0 puts down...
My 4x4 Chevrolet 5.3 get's about 16-17mpg. It's twice as comfortable, way more horse power and the same gas mileage. It's just more practical.
IMO, for what the Jeep is... it could get way better mileage.
But, I like the little things too much to do away with them.

I can mash the gas and blow past some folks on the highway...
Stock gears, I'm guessing.

I'm was getting 220-230 per tank, but now I'm getting about 250. I found one of the vacuum lines for the emissions system had came off. I put that back on and now I'm almost back to 16 MPG. I was getting 14.5 before I found that line.

I was getting about 200-220 to a tank with 4.5 and 32's. I got an alignment and threw in a bottle of BG44k and I'm at 185 miles with over a quarter tank to go.

I bought my cherokee BECAUSE of the gas mileage, is what I'm saying.
For me, after driving several older Grand Marquis, and that Buick... For me to be able to get comparable gas mileage to my '96 lumina, a much smaller vehicle, I'm super happy... I have lots more cargo space, a way more attractive vehicle, and it handles snow wonderfully. I'm not sure of my exact mpg in the XJ, but I've got to be getting closer to the high end than not.
In fact, my cherokee is the gas saver in our garage.
Acceleration is great, after the rebuild... But it was also great before that too. I used to race my friend back after a night at the bar 30 minutes to my exit on the freeway at speeds of 80-100 mph (he was in an older 90's xj), and mine always blew his away. Mine is mostly stock, with the exception of my 31" duratracs.
Yes, racing at those speeds ate gas, but that was to be expected. I was hammering on it!
Normal driving, again, couldn't be more satisfied.

Hope your not just considering the gas gauge reading on Empty to determine when your tank is low. XJ gas guage can be way off. I had a 95 sport 4wd auto that got 360mi on a full tank of gas. I was keeping track on a cross country trip I took way back in 2000. the jeep had a about 60k on it at that time. totally stock. When the light comes on in my 01' xj it usually only takes 15.5 gallons. I have driven it a long way with light on. To the point where it took 19gallons on fill up.

I know why mine gets crappy gas milage! Cause I love driving it and listening to that i6 roar and I love smokin ricers at the light and taking short cuts over curbs and through fields :P

Well i dont know what this one does, but I had a 98 on 31s and took a road trip to Tennesse a few years back , hauled a little trailer with a motorcycle and averaged 19-20 mpg. I thought that was ok. So whoever is claiming 8mpg on a stockish xj is driving a broken jeep.
