Fast is a relative term. I read somewhere that the 0-to-60 time was 9.8 seconds. Relatively speaking, that's on the slower end of the spectrum, but for a very capable SUV, the Cherokee is no slouch.
And if you really like to punch it frequently, (how does the saying go) "it'll pass everything on the highway except a gas station."

^This, I've seen XJs rated from 9.3-10.5 sec. for the 4.0L I6 depending on what test/review you're looking at.
For a little perspective a Jeep Patriot with the 2.4L I4 ranges from 8.7-10.0 sec. and most people complain that it is "slow".
The XJ just feels quicker because of the low-end torque in the 4.0L I6 vs. a DOHC 16v 4 cyl. that lacks the low-end but can rev over 1k rpm higher breathes easier than a OVH 2-valve per cyl. engine.
Torque and where the power curve is has a major impact on "perception of speed". The Company Impalas we have at work with the GM 3.6L V6 (305HP) are actually pretty quick with a 6.2 sec. 0-60, but the lack of low-end torque and they way they are geared makes them feel very slow (with fuel-economy oriented gearing and limited low-end torque they are fairly slow from a stop and don't get moving until you really get in the power band, and then they do move, but it isn't obvious through "feel"). The 4.0L I6 XJ on the other hand gives you a noticeable "shove" when you step on it from a stop, but runs out of steam quickly once it starts to get up in the revs (and redlines at 5200rpm.) creating a perception of speed for what is really merely an "average" vehicle from an acceleration perspective (by modern standards, they were reasonably quick by 90s standards, especially for an SUV/Truck).

BURN
I have a 4.6, and it's still a dog, LOL
Quick off the line, but slow right after...but it's not built for drag races, it's built for torque. Which I am reminded of every time I get on the gas, and quickly let off, the whole thing lurches and twists when you do that, and it's frikkin' kewl, lol...get it in the rocks, and it's right at home
