at the rate that CA is going with emissions and trail closures, I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of onroad wheelers disappear 20 years from now. If the trails are still open, I'll build a buggy.
so I'm not worried about "what the next XJ will be"
the same old cherokee will never return. it's just not profitable. while there are a TON of us who still love the cherokees we have, how many of us would really get rid of our XJ in favor of a 2015 XJ? maybe 3%? theres just no money in it. that's why all the new stylings and commodoties are added to the new cherokees. someone much more educated than us has done some research and found out what sells.

Well, Commander and later Liberty models resemble XJ in so many ways. Commander is still my second favourite Jeep design. But the market is not hot for boxy designs anymore, so the demise of XK was inevitable and maybe it was the last time anything like an XJ is designed.

Remember back in the day when Chevrolet Caprices like this one were easy to find everywhere:
These were a police package vehicle as well, as were a dime a dozen back in the day. Now, you hardly ever see them. It only took 10 or 20 years. Soon, our XJ will be in the same shoes.

Not rare right now, but give it a number of years, and like any other vehicle (like that Caprice), XJs will be harder to find.

Does anyone remember the El camino? I remeber seeing them back in the 80s and 90s. I dont think I ever saw one since 2000.

If a boxy XJ were produced today that met minimum government regulations for crashworthiness, emissions, and fuel economy it would look exactly like the Patriot. They are virtually identical in length, width, height, wheelbase, and weight. The Patriot has round headlights, though.
just my 2 cents

Sometimes, but not necessarily, as it's a unibody vehicle. Without that unibody, you're not going to have anything but a drivetrain. I don't know of any manufacturers that sell aftermarket XJ bodies to build up. Once they're gone, they're gone. They get crunched in junk yards all the time.
Not rare right now, but give it a number of years, and like any other vehicle (like that Caprice), XJs will be harder to find.

They do remake a lot of older car bodies now like the early mustangs camaros tri5 cheys 32 fords. You can get a jeep cj body in fiberglass or aluminum if you got the money. All of it just depends the market and how big the demand is for stuff like that.

They're a good DD/ very light offroad (provided you do the small 2.5" lift that's available for them) vehicle. Personally I would avoid the CVT and go with a 5-spd to avoid future maintenance hassles. Will they be the next XJ? Nope. Here's a good article on the Patriot by TheXJGuys: http://thexjguys.com/?p=378
Hmm.
y'know... that's probably exactly what I really need, even if I actually WANT a stroked XJ on an OME lift with all the trimmings.

As mentioned possible contenders for a newer Jeep that look like the XJ include the XK Commander
And the KK Liberty (North America), still known as the Cherokee in the other 193 countries on the planet. Here's one done up as an "Overland" model by Mopar, presented at the 2011 Moab Easter Safari:
As for current production, the MK Patriot has already been pictured. I think if the Patriot was given a front end from a late-model Compass (which now uses a grille and headlights similar to the WK2, not the goofy round lights that make it look like a VW Beetle that ran into a wall, or wannabe Wrangler), you'd have a pretty sellable vehicle.
Body styles change over time just like fashion does. ****, I look around and I'm seeing kids with pastel colors and longboards talking about vynil records. Maybe woody station wagons will come back some day and we'll be singing do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do.
Of course pressure on manufacturers is high to get fuel economy up. If you look at automotive history over the past 100 years, practical fuel economy hasn't changed that much, which is reasonable to call out as silly. (20 MPG in a Ford Model A at 50 MPH... compare to your Jeep.) However I wouldn't rule out the reappearance of the basic shape - technically the notion of a 4-door box never died with the Jeep brand - also look at some recent models from Scion (xB). Technology gets better and tastes do change.
Other favorite vehicle... hmmmmm... in what category? lol
