The XJ performed nicely.

I was able to shift into 4Hi at various speeds, and the shift was instant.

I was able to shift back to 2WD on the fly, as well.
After putting it into 2WD, it would still be in 4Hi, and after a minute or so, there would be a loud CLUNK and it would be back in 2WD.
Glad to hear it!!

Ever see this?

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual.

"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off.

4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

I run BFG AT KOs all year round. One other '99 that I drive on occasion has the 242 case. It has Goodyear Eagle pursuit tires on it(street vs AT). With just a tad bit of snow last week, it was all over the place in 2 and 4wd. I was able to shift it into Full time and 4HI with no difficulty. Mine, I was able to drive the same exact roads in 2wd with no real slippage. Also was able to shift mine into 4HI without issue at speed. I have had to use 4LO to keep from spinning the tires and have some power to pull some of my Scouts around the yard. Yes no 4WD unless you are totally off pavement that isn't covered in ice or snow.

this is the reason you see trucks with even more snow piled in the back of the bed, along with a couple bags of sand make for better traction for 2wd's...

add 4wd in oklahoma and people think they're invincible, matter of fact anyone towing a trailer out here think they're invincible or somehow the trailer adds horsepower and *****... IDK, never seen anything like it but since living out here it irks me bigtime....

I yelled at a coworker for clearing the snow out of my Comanche's bed last winter. They were from the south and thought they were doing a good deed.

I disagree with this.

Today was my first snow day with the jeep. I have done the past 19 years in front wheel drive Hondas and acuras. I'll take controllable oversteer over terminal under steer every day of the week.

Today to get out of my driveway uphill with about 5-6 inches of heavy wet snow I......

Walked past the shovel, got in the jeep, shifted to 4wd lo, put it in 1st let off the clutch (without touching the gas) and she climbed right out. Once over the snow bank left by the plows I went right back to 2wd an had an uneventful drive to work.

Sure 4wd beats 2wd in the snow, but if you aren't stuck an have the ability to accelerate 2wd works fine.

Everything 2wd sucks on icy inclines when you are trying to get going from a dead stop. I had studded General Altimax tires on my old rwd car and it was still terrible. My Jeep is even worse because of how wide my tires are right now (12.5) and it sucks at everything important (Turning & stopping).
I need some skinnier tires

Never get stuck at least

In 2WD, it has worse traction than a Honda Civic.
Even in the rain, the back tires slip like crazy on a turn or hill.
Snow? Forgetaboutit!
In 2WD, the XJ is total crap.

So true. With proper winter tyres, even a BMW will cope with snowy roads until clearance becomes an issue.

Maybe you just have driving issues... my driveway is a 31 degree incline... COMPLETELY covered in wet leaves... and pouring rain, I can still easily get up it in 2wd.

I also never have any trouble driving around in rain. Pouring rain. You're a nub.

It's newb, or noob, not nub.

Nubs are ON the tires.

He doesn't deserve the extra letter.

I feel like "nub" is the most contemptuous version

Newbs are new guys. Descriptive; not offensive

Noobs are non-new guys who act like new guys and make rookie mistakes

Nub is a more derogatory form of noob

So says the internet world I grew up in as these terms came to exist

I just checked and it's a 31* incline :P

But really, I have... pretty worn Wrangler RT/S... and I'm 99% sure Bimmer has road tires too
