I have a Q. So I have an 02 GC, and it goes into 4 fulltime perfectly fine without a problem. But when I go to shift back into 2WD, it always gives me problems and gets stuck in part time... Any help? It's a real pain in the ***! I shift from fulltime to 2wd the exact same way I do when I shift in to 4wd! Thanks guys

2 questions. What options are on you TC shift lever. And what eexactly do you do when you shift. Are you driving or standing still. How often you use it.

I have the 242 transfer case. So 2wd, part time, full time, neutral, and 4lo. I use it whenever it snows and whenever there's snow on the ground so often as I live in CT. I got the car to running temp, get it up to about 5MPH, let off gas, then shift into 4wd. Same shifting out. So I don't know why it gives me problems going back into 2wd

Yea, you not the only person with this issue for sure. Ppl always complain about the 242 with this. I know its been detailed covered in other threads before so if other ideas don't chime in, Def search it up.

Im happy i have a 231 since its easy and never gives trouble.

(part time) I can understand when you are in town and making a lot of turns etc. but what about the interstate? I have ran all of my XJs like that (dry with snow/ice in spots) down the interstate for miles and miles, year after year with no problems.
I be hard pressed to imagine what conditions/situations would be where 4WD would help at 80....

instructions to get my jeep into 4x4

1. start jeep, keep in park
2. crawl under jeep
3. fiddle with linkage
4. climb up and shift transfercase into 4hi
5. if step 4 fails to shift into 4hi, repeat steps 2. and 3.

the bushing that holds the linkage together is worn out, i need to replace it.

Same thing going back into 2WD...

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual.

"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off.

4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

My zj with a 231 always takes a little extra persuading to get from 4lo back to 4hi.

HAHAHA, oh I know that one. My old 242 got stuck in 4hi, and I got to experience this, at night, on a quiet mountain road, while a light snow/-rain mix was falling, with no cell reception. I only had the rig for a month, and my wife was less than happy.
I continued this slick way of doing it a couple more times, and then it just became stuck in 4hi.

As of yesterday though, I have new linkage, and a rebuilt 231/sye/TW driveline.
Unfortunately, after the instal last night, the new TC is stuck in 2wd and I have to take it to the shop that rebuilt the TC to have the tech check it out. First I need to drain the oil though, as we just put a new Clearwater 0331 head on and it needs one more flush for safety.

Guys, please tell me it gets better.

TTT?

The most important question of the thread is still unanswered!

Mostly snow drifting. So much more front end control in 4-hi.

I've done it. As long as there is wheel slip, you're fine.............

Isn't that the truth. My old hardend tires aren't even good on dry pavement. Stopping in the rain sometimes creates pucker marks on the drivers seat.
