So i got the heep back from the local auto repair shop (orchards automotive), and well they couldnt get the jeep to die on them at all. I was told everything was looked over (grounds, sensors, wires, etc). They also told me my CAt Conv was toast which i knew already. He tried explaining to me that sometimes when a cat is fried that it can clog the entire exhaust temporarily long enough to stall out the motor. Ive never heard this so any other helpful tips would be appreciated!

It can, it can also cause it to overheat. Replace the cat.

So on the way to taking it to the muffler shop it died on me again. I pulled a spark plug wire off and it fired right up. Coincidence? Anyways made it to the shop got the cat replaced and now it seems to run a little bit better. Better throttle response at least, ran like a top all the way home. Hopefully this fixes the problem.

Oh man, so the jeep died on me AGAIN. Brand new cat didnt fix it. Where else should i even look?

Could a short ram intake drag in too much hot air and combust before it should causing it to stall?

^^definitely not. it really sounds like the throttle position sensor. its a code 24 I believe. and autozone cant read stored codes. only active ones.

Just try a new TPS... Mine was surging and bogging but wasn't throwing a single code -- tuned it up, thew on a new TPS, and it ran perfectly.

If you're careful during installation, you might be able to return the new TPS if it's not your problem. =P

How about describe the stall.

Is it just dying immediately like you're turning the key off or is it spitting and sputtering before it dies like it's running out of gas?

It dies immediately no warning what so ever. One secone ill be rolling down and bam engine dies. Stereo stays on etc, will just crank and crank

Mine was doing that last week. Swapped the CPS and it fixed it. (I see that you've already tried that.)

Does it usually fire back up pretty soon afterwards or does it have to cool down completely first?

I'm assuming this is in a 96 XJ 4.0?

And it does have to cool down about ten minutes or so.

Hmmm, a bad ignition coil could cause this but when they usually die it won't start back up. They're fairly inexpensive. Could be worth a shot.

Does it always die when you're under throttle? Does it die while idling? Never the same? No pattern?
