Rust, clunks, steering, worn suspension components, oil color and level, tranny oil, etc...

Presence of floors

Check the air filter box for oil. If it's oily either the CCV system isn't working correctly, or the engine is excessively worn, creating more blowby than it can remove.
Start it cold and listen for noises. If the engine's "warmed up" for you when you get there...erm.. come back later.
Check for oil (or unusually clean spots) around the rear main.
Smack the cat and see if it rattles. '96 had a bad run leading to a recall.

All the stuff listed previously. If you are in the road-salt belt, emphasis on the "rust", particularly rear shackle mounts and subframe rails. Floors aren't too bad to replace, beyond that you'll be come quite intimate with your welder.

I'd consider that a "senior Jeep".

I thought my 90 might be "immortal", in that when this engine with 265K went, I'd just deal with it. THEN I figured out the leaks I'd been having trouble with where where the whole uni-body is cracking, corners by the hatch hinges. Also cracking by the posts. Parked crooked, the hatch will hit the tale light. So besides having that handy floor part, that's one that might be tough to fix. I looked at my non-opped 84, nice looking body, but it's starting to crack there also.

Well, that 91 was off a buy here pay here lot I bought it because I needed a cheap vehicle for the winter. So I overpaid $400 down plus tax, total price was $1600.

If you're buying a 96 with that mileage from a private party I'd say it should be around $1000 or less. If you are worried about being high mileage then you should probably just keep shopping.
