Lots of different things come into play when your talking about 2wd and what or where you can go. The XJ does quite well off road in 2wd and not trying to sound like a smart a$$ but the amount of time behind the wheel makes all the difference in driving in 2 and 4wd both.
In that situation you were in if you would have had a better eye you could have went right through it easy. Always take your time and look closely at what or where you intend to go, a locker will really help you.

Yeah I know what you mean haha. I've had this jeep for 2 years and never got it stuck until that fateful day, in sand. That ruined my 4wd, and I haven't been able to off road without getting stuck since.
I had a 1986 2wd Dodge D150 that had a posi rear end.
That truck could go anywhere a 4wd would go, and a few times went farther than a 4wd did. Never had trouble with that old truck. But my jeep don't wanna go anywhere with 2wd. After seeing all this tho, I do believe a rear locker would help a lot haha

The key is to air down to 12 psi and do not spin the tires. If you have to go up an incline, use enough momentum to get to the top.

love me some 2 wheel wheeling. Mud burnouts ftw.
Like others said though, you can get through plenty in two wheel drive, and Im just running a ****ty posi.

I've had my '94 Cherokee for only a short time. The wife loves it, but that may change when the snow hits here. 4WD not being full time may be a problem for her. Maybe she will be OK when learning how to engage 4WD ?
I noticed that in 2WD it lights up the rear tires very easy, which may be an issue for her ......we'll see.
Otherwise, it's a neat little vehicle, and easy to work on. First Jeep I've had....

Yeah Richie I think that may be my problem lol. No posi. I've been able to play in 2wd and hit 4wd if I needed. I've also been up in mud halfway up the doors in 4hi and it just walked with no issue. And that was with all open diffs. The thing about not having lockers is power takes the path of least resistance.
And Bill, I'm not sure about that. I've had my wife driving in mud before, and she hasn't really had a problem with the shifter, but snow isn't a really big issue being I live in SC.

Yeah guys even at 67 I can't bring myself to sell the wagon even though they won't let me on the track any more. But its barley street legal so I do drive it there a little even at 1500 HP can do a street tune and run pump gas at 675 HP but its doggy for sure. At least its easy to tune all it takes is a laptop and about 4-5 min. to change them.

My 2wd XJ sits on 3.5 inches of lift with BFG KM2 M/T. Driving it in the snow is an adventure, driving it off road is very interesting. 2WD off road makes you use a balance of strategy and throttle to overcome obstacles. I lose big time on climbing obstacles which I have to rely on speed to get over. I'm planning to do a locker and a winch, I'm sure It will be fine after that.
