Default You all think 2001 Cherokee Sports are good?

So I will be purchasing my first vehicle soon, just got out of high school. I know I want a cherokee, how much do you guys think an 01 cherokee sport in good condition with around 100k miles will cost? My friend says $5000 is alot for it. Is that true? I have been looking around ebay and stuff.

Or should I get an earlier model?

you might be better off getting an older one. The 2000 and 2001 are known for bad engines so people say. You should be able to get one for around 2500$ to 3500$ in good condition.

I'm sure he was referring to the cylinder heads and the known casting defect that can cause them to crack if overheated.

Around here a 2001 Sport will go for around $6000 on a dealer lot or between $3500 and $5000 for a private party. I picked up my 2000 Sport for $4000 and the sellers price was non negotiable. It seemed like a fair price to me so I gave it a new home.

Down here in Florida, I got a 2001 Sport for $7600 with tax, tag, and title fees from like a little dealer. Guy buys a bunch of cars from people/auctions and re-sells. That price may seem high but power everything and absolute IMPECCABLE interior. A couple of scratches and dents on the outside, but the best thing about it you ask? Only 58,000 miles and I'm the second owner.

Funny someone brought up the 2000 and 2001 with crcked heads. i blew 2 heads on mine last summer at around 110k miles. She always had regualrly scheduled maintenaince. Still love her though. 1st and only vehicle for me.

My 2001 has 160,000+ miles on it with no issues. The only non-maintenance thing I have replaced was the alternator, and thats because I filled it with mud. I paid $4500 about 2.5 years ago, and it had 112K on it at the time.

The biggest issues with the later models, 97-01, is the heat soak misfire. With age the injectors begin the lose their ability to deflect the heat from the exhaust manifold. After reaching operating temp and being shut off for about 10-15 minutes, the heat will mograte up form the exh manifold and boil the fuel in the #2 or 3 injector causing a misfire on restart. It will stumble and idle like crap for about 10 minutes and finally clear up but will throw a CEL. Once it does it the first time it will continue under the injectors are replaced and a heat sheild is installed to prevent it from happening again.

I have an 01 Sport with 177K on the odometer and that is the only problem I have had so far other than a leak in the AC system. Paid $5900 for it at a dealer and should have shopped around a little more. Could have gotten a better Jeep for less cash, but oh well she's paid for now.

I paid 7000$ or so for my '00 Sport from a private dealer, 92k miles, runs like a champ. already lifted with a pro-comp 3". tire/wheel upgrades, tinted windows, rack, full size spare + hi lift, body is perfect sans one very minor dent on the front bumper some paint issues, but its 10 year old paint so what can ya do. interior is flawless. Needless to say, Me and the Wife fell in love with her at first sight. and bought her immediately after a test drive.

I just saw a dealer selling a 2001 for 7995 with 79k miles on it. I wouldn't have paid that though. I don't think 5k would be too bad if it is in really clean state. 2001s are known for their cylinder head cracking if it overheats but all you have to do is make sure it doesn't overheat. but if it does and does crack then just replace it with a cylinder head from a 99 or older.

I have a "2000" XJ and have the 0630 head with the coil pack... Purchased mine for $3500 with lift, bfg km2's, roof rack, high lift, etc...

Just curious, but does anyone know the cutoff production date to where the 0331 heads started being installed in the 2000 model year???

I have a 2000, no engine problems here at 141K, plus 00-01 have electronic ignition, so no distributor to worry about, just have a coil pack.
