Default 98 ZJ NP242 into 95 XJ

Ive located a 98 ZJ 4.0 with a 242 tcase at a local wrecker. Ive been trying to find a 242 tcase for months now. Will the late model ZJ tcases bolt to an earlier XJ with AW4?

You may have to swap the input shafts, what is wrong with yours? If it's bad you may be better off rebuilding it, that way you know it's in good shape. They aren't that hard to rebuild.

Im trying to swap my NP231 to a NP242. I actually just rebuilt my 231 with all new bearings, seals and a chain two weeks ago, i was hoping to put it off till i found a 242 but they appear to be rare as hens teeth around here, so i decided it couldnt wait anymore and rebuilt it with a novak kit.

I just happened to stumble across this ZJ in the salvage yard yesterday and noticed it had a 242 in it.

I would keep the 231, it's a better transfer case in my opinion, and has more parts avaiblity. I swapped my 242 for a 231.

I want the options the 242 has. Not that i mind the 231. Its fine. I just like options. Dont really care about aftermarket i have no interest in 4:1 gears or twin sticks or anything like that. I dont really think the 231 is "better" than the 242 other than the aftermarket support. It's plenty strong.
