That doesn't necessarily mean they're in good condition inside. U-joints are one of the most neglected parts on vehicles that really should be serviced on a regular basis. I still say that your u-joints are the problem
How do you figure that? I just looked at ALL of the 3" lit kit options on Rusty's website, non of them include shackles, which are the only thing that would cause a change in the pinion angle.
A transfercase drop will only end up causing more problems in the long run because then the pinion angle isn't in line with the transfer-case output. I'm gonna stick to my guns and say that the problem is his u-joints until I hear something that makes me think differently. Everything he's described so far screams bad u-joints.
Do a 3" kit with lower control arms and full leaf packs, especially if its mainly going to be for the street.
Brake lines, and driveshafts? No. You don't HAVE to extend your shocks either, but its still a good idea.
Exactly what I meant, when you lift it you alter the angle from what came from the factory. The shims help to bring it back within the desired spec. He said he dropped the TC (reduced driveline angle slightly) and it helped a bit. That leads me to believe the angle is too far off. I suggested that U-joints might be part of the issue because it would make sense that if they were already worn, putting more stress on them due to excessive angle would cause what may have already been a problem to suddenly become more noticeable.

I'm looking to do a lift and like everyone else I don't have a lot of money. Also my wife will be driving it more than me so I need it to be safe. I won't be doing a lot of off roading but mainly going for the look. I was thinking of the RC 3" but should I go to the 4.5". I hear anything above 3" you need the SYE. Is that true? Also I don't want it to end up being to wide either. Again my wife will be driving it.......I saw that RE has a 3.5" kit with leaf packs for around $550 is that a good kit and again will I need to do a SYE? Thanks guys

.
but a lift puts the driveshaft itself at a steeper angle, which can cause driveline vibes easily on a slip joint driveshaft if the angle is to extreme. u-joints are only made to run at certain angles.
but really it mostly depends on driveshaft length, which will vary from XJ to Xj depending on running gear. example: an ax15/231 equipted xj with a dana 35 will have a longer driveshaft and will be less prone to driveline vibes than a aw4/231 jeep with a 8.25, which will have a shorter driveshaft and therefore a steeper ujoint angle.
and a TC drop can correct this. but an SYE setup with a double-cardon is preffered.

sure, there is always a possibility that its his u-joints.

On 3" of lift, regardless of the drivetrain set-up if the u-joints are in good working order there's no reason that you would have excessive driveline vibrations like he's describing. I have multiple friends who have had Cherokees with the less-than ideal setup(Aw4/231/8.25) with in excess of 4.5" of lift and the newer style NP231, they didn't have any driveshaft vibrations or problems of that nature.
U-joints are designed to operated within certain angular limitations, with 3" of lift on an XJ you are not nearing or exceeding those limitations. Assuming the pinion and transfercase angles are correct along with u-joints in good working order he should have very little or no driveshaft vibration.

Hey, I just wanted to let everyone know that I figured out what the problem was. It was not ujoints, or driveshafts or anything like that. I think I should recieve the retard of the day award for this one.
We spent most of the night putting the lift on my XJ. started around 10pm got done around 5:30am on Dec 23rd. Took it for a drive and heard a loud clanking sound that got worse with speed, so I took it back to the shop and crashed on the couch. The next day I went out to tinker with it I found that the driver side rear whel was not tight. I was really embarrassed when I realized that we had over looked that one wheel. Shame on me. She drives just fine now.
One more question, I still want to put an SYE and DS on it eventually. Who or where is the best place to buy from? I have dealt with Tom Woods in the past and they seemed ok. Prices were a little high on the SYE IMO.

thinking about putting a 2 inch lift on it, im just trying to make make sure the
31-1050R15 gdy dura trac tires are going to fit.
should i change the shocks or no?
will they fit? I currently have 23575R15LT gdy wrl siltamor tires and to be honest they do sometimes rub, thats only when I hit a deep hole too fast.

For a SYE kit, I'd go with advanced adapters. You can either do a stock front driveshaft or order a custom build unit from Tom Woods. Either or works just fine.

I have 31's on a 3" lift and I rub on LCA's a little on tight corners. I think you would have the same on 2" unless you think about swapping out wheels for more backspacing.
