that is what Rubicon Express recommends on their site, so i bought the rims already, but now I've heard that the backspacing could be an issue.

1st off, you don't "need" to buy one...you MIGHT need to buy one. Above 3-3.5" of lift on an XJ and you will be prone to rear DS vibes. However, each jeep (different driveline setups) react differently to lifts. Most will recommend you lift 1st, then solve vibrations IF they occur. You other option would be a TC drop. Some people say not to, but there's a lot of people who do as a short term-solution to vibes until they get an SYE. You can put me in this category.

To answer your question, no, not a longer DS. You need an entirely different DS. The point of the SYE is to get rid of the poorly functioning stock rear DS and replace the slip yoke with a CV DS. Most people use the stock front CV DS found in an automatic XJ. You can get one at most junkyards for about $40.

Clear as mud?

Don't. More importantly, do a bunch of research before you even order your lift. Best to know all the possible outcomes before you're sitting there with an undrivable jeep and no money to fix it because you spent it all on the lift components that are now the problem.

My XJ probably has one of the sets more prone to vibes, auto trans with the 242 TC and C8.25. The 242 is longer than the 231, the auto is longer than the manual, and I believe the pinion on the 8.25 creates worse angles on the D35 (not 100% on that tho). I'm at 4" in the rear with a .75 TC drop with very little vibes between 20-40mph under accelleration. I prolly need to shim my axle up about 2° to make it right, just haven't gotten to it.

Good luck!

With that trans and TC you will be less likely to have vibes...but with XJ's there's no promises....haha!

Got the Jeep back today. RE 3.5 Superflex w/ leaf packs, RE track bar & brace. Now, tires & wheels are next. Probably going to go with 31" MTZ's with 15x8 M/T Classic II's. National Tire & Wheel looks like the best price. Thoughts?

I'm looking at piecing together my own lift as I don't have the money to buy a full kit... I'm only looking at a little boost in hight so I've been looking at ome hd 2"leafsprings are they worth there price? And how will they look with 235s?

Why not do a shackle lift and spring spacers if you want a little more height. I just did a 2" on the wife's Xj and slapped 30s on it. Looks good if you're not wanting to spend much.
