Backspacing, wheel, tire, and lift question
I have had several different jeeps over the years but have never lifted one. Well, it's time for new tires anyway so...
I want to keep my stock rims for various reasons (mostly the "jeep budget" imposed by the old lady). The 3" lift kit that I am going with recommends a 4.5" backspacing but I believe that my factory 16"x7" alloy wheels have a 5.25" backspacing. I plan to run 265/75 16's. Will I have any problems with this set up due to the backspacing?

Yeah, you'll have problems You will rub, fenders, flares, control arms, etc. I have that exact same tire on a wheel with 4.25" BS, no rubbing on the control arms, but had to trim the fenders some and bumpstop...
Here's the kicker, mine is on a 4.5" lift. You're going to have to trim ALOT to fit those tires, plus adjust you steering stops and bumpstop like crazy to fit those tires.

I run a 3" plus a 1" spacer on stock wheels and 31's. I only rub with steering at full lock or at the very extreme ends of my flex. If I ran a less backspaced wheel id be fine.

you will rub, but you are not going to have to "trim a lot" or steer stop like crazy.
daily driving you'll be able to fit them no problem.
if you wheel it, you'll rub the corners of your fenders just a bit if bumpstopped correctly.
if you would rather wait to buy some properly backspaced wheels you'll be fine on the road. you'll just have to take some wide turns in parking lots but other than that you'll hardly ever rub while turning.

3" is advertised lift, this varies slightly between manufacturers and application. At first it will probably sit a bit higher, especially in the rear, but 'should' settle down around the listed 3".

Sorry, I disagree with this. I just got done putting this exact tire size (essentially a 32x10.5) on my XJ that I just lifted 4.5 and had to trim the front fenders a little just to DD it, they caught the rear of the front wheel well while turning. To put 32's on a 3.5" lift he's going to have to trim more.
I run 32x11.5s on 3" and they fit as I described. its actually 2" in the rear due to sagging leaves
