Hey every one. I'm a new xj owner, and I'm desperate to lift mine for beach buggying. I would want to get 33s on her, but that's kind of unrealistic for me. So, my question is, " how high can I lift it before I need to tilt the tranny or lengthen the drive shaft?" I'd appreciate any input you can muster. Cheers.

3.5 inches is usually about as high as you can go without having to mess with an SYE or TC drop or anything and 3.5 is also plenty to clear 33s with a bit of fender trimming and bumpstopping, that's the setup I run, 3.5" RE lift on 33 km2s and I don't have any troubles with driveline vibes or tire rubbing or anything

Why did you re ask the same question without answering someone that's willing to help you.

You still didn't tell us about your jeep.

hey guys quick question. im in the middle of putting on my 3.5" RE lift, and i cant seem to get enough droop in the front to get the coil out, even with a spring compressor. the axle is binding on the LCA, im trying to think of what im missing. trackbar and steering is still bolted up, could that be my issue? i know its probably a dumb question, but its been a long day and i figured id call it a night and ask here lol.

not sure if this is right procedure (but it worked for me) we unbolted the LCAs from the axle side then set the car down to get them into place last

Im gonna try disconnecting the steering, the bolts for the lca is frozen in the bushing, so thats last resort at this point, since i dont have new bolts if i muck up the original too much.

Should only need to disconnect the steering (use the two hammer technique to remove tapered bolts) and/or trackbar. Of course the shocks should be unbolted from axle and also the swaybar links.

i agree, having to take the CAs off is too much. Maybe the LCA one at a time if push came to shove but i didn't do all that when i did mines

The bolt is likely being held by a 'load'. Especially if the axle is drooped.

thanks for the help guys, we got the front taken care of, (mostly). The steering was holding it up, and without it dropped all the way there wasnt enough room to get the coils in and out. but got the new spring and shocks in the front, unfortunately the TRE on the stock track bar is completely frozen on, so had to remove the frame mount and trackbar as one . Going to get the bracket to turn the RE adjustable into a double shear while im at because well, i might as well upgrade if its already off.

Same thing happened to me! Then I came across a YouTube video out of no where and you basically have to hit the mount not the track bar but hit as close to the track bar as possible, I remember I went out to the garage and started whackin it as close to TRE as possible and came loose! But yeah you can do double shear I have an IRO one just sitting in my room waiting to go in haha

Default New XJ Owner!

I just bought a stock 98 XJ that I plan to use as my DD. I was looking to lift it 3" and throw some 31" tires on it. What I want to know I what would be the best lift to buy and where is a good place to get wheels and tires? I don't have much money to throw at it right now so I'm working on a tight budget. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Get this question all the time. Best lift and tight budget never go together. BDS, Teraflex, Rubicon Express, Clayton, Old Man Emu are some of the best kits out there but they are not cheap. Especially when you consider the things needed that typically aren't included in the base kit (new adjustable trackbar, lower control arms, sway bar extensions, Slip Yoke Elminator AND cv driveshaft, at least rear brakeline) just to list some. If you want to go cheap, then go Zone Offroad or Rusty's. Rusty's does lift + tire and wheel combos all in one shot.

http://www.rustysoffroad.com/jeep-su...-pack-kit.html

However this is 1400 dollars not including the things I listed above. Add at least another 500 dollars (plus install).

You can usually find tires cheapest used on craigslist. Or new on tirerack or amazon.
A GOOD kit with everything included above will cost you about 1400 dollars (at 3 inches) NOT including tires wheels and driveshaft work.

Granted everything listed is not REQUIRED but is highly recommended. In my opinion, doing it right once, the first time is much more satisfying than going half-*** and needing more work later.
