Hey guys,
I'm just getting into upgrading my cherokee and looking at buying a 4.5'' RE lift and putting 33's on it. I've never wheeled, but this is my first truck and want to get into it. I'm probably not going to be an every weekender (IDK who is), but I'm in college and would like to go maybe like once a month. Otherwise this will be my dd. Would you recommend the 3'' lift with 31's or a 4.5'' inch with 33's? I'm currently looking at the Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs 33X12.50X15's. I saw a couple people were able to pick them up for around 155 bucks a tire. If anyone still has the receipt can they post a picture? I'd love to see if a place will price match it for me. The cheapest I've been able to find online was about 180 a tire after mail rebates etc.

Get some armor, rockers most of all. Lca mini skids, cut n fold, diff armor, etc

Don't forget treadwright.com. You can get 31s for 98 a tire if you go with the wardens which are identical to BFG all terrains. Just make sure your steering and ball joints and such are good or you'll wear them out...but I guess that goes with any lifted vehicle

id get some tap and trap to keep the shavings from going everywhere, and just make sure you don't get shavings places you don't want them. Maybe put some rags between the locker and the side of the carrier that your tapping just to make sure you don't get anything down in there.
I guess I will just drill it out to a 1/4" and put a new roll/spring pin in unless I can just use a bolt and nut with some lock tite?

Hey guys. I just bought my first XJ a few weeks ago. I got a 99 cherokee classic with about a 2" lift (I think with a taller soil spring and an AAL, but I'm not completely sure). Other than a towing bar and a trailer hitch, everything else looks stock to me. For now, I want to lift the front a little more and put bigger tires under it. I am also looking for some other necessary or recommended modifications to do. Here are my build plan so far and the questions I have.
1" coil spacer for front - Can I just install these with no problems or will I need to extended brake lines/sway bar links/etc?
Skid plates - Which ones do I need? Transfer case? Gas tank? Any others? What's the cheapest ones I can get for now? I will upgrade these once I start upgrading the drivetrain/suspension.
Bigger tires - I bought some 15" wheels with 3.75" backspacing. Now I just need the tires. I was thinking 31x10.5's... will these rub? Could I go up to 32's? What needs to be trimmed to ensure no rubbing? What about bump-stops and steering stops?
Sway bar removal/QD's - Because this will be my DD, I am confused about the best way to do this. I should keep the front sway bar for highway use, right? Does anybody make a QD kit for such a small lift? What about the rear sway bar? Can I just completely remove that?
Are there any easy upgrades that I am missing?

You'll need longer shocks.
You can simply straighten out the hard line for the front brakes, don't forget to re-secure the mount though.
You can toss the rear sway bar.

The 3.75" backspacing is fine and you'll definitely need to trim to run a 32" tire.
Don't forget that your performance/fuel economy will be affected by jumping up to a taller tire. Start saving up for new gears, you'll be glad you did.

Thank you very much for the quick response. I didn't even think about shocks. How can I figure out what size shocks I can run? I have read that if I lengthen the bumpstops, I can run an even longer shock. Which would give me more droop? Would this require me to get even longer brake lines or control arms?
As for gears, I figured I would wait until I could afford new axles and lockers... do it all at once. I have read that the stock Dana 30/35 aren't strong enough. Is this true? Or could I just throw new gears and lockers in my stock axles?

The d35 is well known for being weak and not worth investing in.Look for a Chrysler 8.25" axle from a 97+ XJ. Snag the rear driveshaft from the donor rig as well.
The D30 is fine for the vast majority of XJ drivers.
The best way to determine the shocks you need is to remove all 4 from your rig and flex the suspension fully then measure between the mounting points for both exrended and collapsed lengths. Once those are known you can order the correct shock for your rig.
Bumpstops do one thing only, they limit up-travel. this keeps your tires from contacting anything in the wheel well or the fenders themselves. This also kwwps the tires from getting cut or otherwise damaged. The only thing you want touching your tires is the ground. Make sense?
Longer control arms won't do anything for you at your ride height except push the axle farther forward. You don't need longer, but adjustable arms are always a good choice. They will allow you to properly locate your front axle after installing a lift. Once again though, at your height.....you don't really need them.
