I installed a poly trans mount that is about an inch shorter than the stock trans mount and I'm using that as a "TC drop" until this spring when I plan to do the SYE.
If done right the first time, it's an hour or two depending on experience and level of comfort. I've seen a lot of people mess up by putting parts in backward or moving the selector handle while it's dismantled. You should easily have it done in a day if you take pictures during disassembly

Oh yeah... drive shaft lol. And a tube of RTV. Once you get the thing back in you can drive around in FWD until you get a rear shaft.

Check this chart out: http://www.myjeepxj.com/useful-infor...aft-infomation OE shaft allows for 1.5" travel from running length to compressed and extended lengths. So once the SYE is in measure between yokes, subtract an inch and a half, and go looking for that shaft at the JY.

Depending on how the rear end is lifted you may need to fix the pinion angle. When running a double-cardan joint in the DS you need the pinion in line with the driveshaft. Generally that means the pinion is pointing at the transfer case yoke. Shims for the rear axle will do this, but so will shackles, and some relocation boxes.

Many months... the NP231 I was working on is in my shed and I poked at it in the evenings lol

Sounds good, that's about what I figured. I've torn into several motors just never tinkered with a transfer case. I'll do plenty of reading on it this winter so I'm prepared.

Normally the guideline is anything above 3" but it also depends on the vehicle itself. You can have two Jeeps with the same lift, one may have driveline vibes and the other may not.

I don't want to keep my homemade TC drop on longer than I have to and would like to start budgeting and collecting parts to do the SYE in the spring after I pull my other car out of storage.
Look up bleepinjeep sye on google, a video by Matt from bleepinjeep should show up called How To Install an SYE - A Comprehensive Guid. I would do a link but I'm on my phone. He shows you how to install a real sye not a hack-n-pat on a NP231. Hopefully that will help.

It depends on the tire. Duratracs should last a while. 30k or so.

Specifically, it depends on tire compound (how hard/soft it is), the size of the contact patch, and how you drive. But you should be able to get an estimate per tire by reading reviews
