Keep in mind that driving on the street with too little pressure in your tires will cause them to get extremely hot. It shortens the life of the tires and could cause immediate structural failure

First off on for the lift, what is the smallest height increase you can go while upgrading to longarms? My rig sees a lot of highway and is used in an overlanding type scenario most often. Id like to keep it a reasonable height for on road handling, I dont plan on running too much of a bigger tire and have no problem trimming fenders to fit, But id like the added benefit of longarm travel/ride quality when its needed. Its not used in hardcore wheeling but id like to get rid of the stock shortarms and their mounts seem a little weak. Would i be better off reinforcing the stock mounts and going to tubular arms?(im reinforcing the unibody too) or is there a longarm kit that is around 2-3" of lift? Or would it have to be pieced together.
My next question on the Backspacing. Im upgrading my steering with a solution kit that requires 4.5" maximum backspacing what size spacers would i need to run to acheive that? Im running stock steel wheels on my 1994 Jeep Cherokee 2 door 5 Speed.
Thanks!

You will have a much wider choice of kits and price ranges if you would go to a 4-4 1/2" lift where most of them start at and quite a bit more travel range. Another item that you did not mention was a track bar and a Adj. Dbl. Shear one is what you need.

For the wheel size they are so cheap just buy new ones the proper size to begin with like a 15x8" with 3.75-4" of BS they start at about $30 or so and up for a steel wheel.

My 99 XJ drives quite well on the highway at 4 1/2" of lift being a short arm, but the plans were for a long arm when I lifted to that height, and with one much better off road/on highway both.

Clown is right on you need a compressor to inflate for on road use a must.

The original kit was designed to give a little bit of a stretch. I believe the new alpha kit is the same. Obviously the higher you're lifted the less stretch you can get and vise versa. I think if you run it at 3", you'd get a stretch even with it adjusted all the way in.

Depending on the amount of stretch, that could cause problems with your steering

Default Backspacing

If I run a 15x7 rim on a 31x10.5x15 tire with a 3.5in lift, how much backspace will I need?

3.5-4.5" is generally recommended, but it's possible you could run into clearance issues with your fenders, depending on lift height and whether or not you trim

I'm wanting to run a 3.5" RE lift and try to avoid trimming if I can.

That lift will get you about 4.5 inches of lift. You'll be fine.

Ruff stuff diff cover sticks out around 3/4" to 1" over the stock cover. Go turn to full lock and measure to see if you have that much clearance between the tie rod and your stock cover.

I just measured mine compared to the stock cover, both are sitting on my bench at the moment.

My fenders did rub a bit with 31s and the 3.5" RE lift. Ending up getting bushwackers because it bugged me so much.

Odd. I have 3.5" RE coils and only rubbing is the LCA at full steering lock, stock rims

I have some very deep covers on my XJ with the ZJ steering upgrade and no problems with touching or rubbing.
