I plan to run IRO leaf springs, which come in 3.5” and 5.5” flavors. I already have a Ford 8.8 installed and RE 1” lift shackles, so I’m looking at 1.5-2” of lift on top of whatever the springs give me…so roughly 5-5.5” or 7-7.5” of lift. I plan to trim the fenders as much as I can while still running flares to keep it legal (probably the cheap generic ones on eBay) and will have steel bumpers, a full size spare, a winch, and basic camping gear.
Which springs should I go with to clear 35’s? This is NOT a mall crawler, but it does need to perform DD duties. It’ll be twin locked and running the hardest trails in Moab, so it needs as much flex as possible while keeping the center of gravity low. Long arms, a front Dana 44, and subframe reinforcements will be installed too.

If you start your own thread I’m sure you’ll get some good feedback. Sounds like a badass project tho.

Thanks everyone! Looking at a 3" lift with 31's now. Please keep chiming in though. I'd love to see pics if that is what you have!

Long Arms without welding!
For lifts taller than 3-1/2" - this is a game changer

Ok so just got my first jeep. 1998 sport 2 door. 174xxx kms on it. Zero rust. Very clean jeep. Just passed safety inspection and she is on the road.
I'd like to get 31" tires and it seems a 3" lift is supposed to clear that. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
At this point in time, I don't want an expensive lift. I want to clear those tires without cutting any metal.
This jeep is my daily driver that I want to be able to play with.
What do you recommend for a budget lift to clear 31" tires and still behave properly on the road.

Rusty's is a good lift for the money

Spacers, add a leaf and shackles are the cheapest way to go. However, your stock springs are 24 years old, and you'd be stressing them a different way. I wouldn't expect the lift to last more than a year
An economical full kit: Rusty's XJ Cherokee 3" A dvanced Kit - XJ Cherokee ('84-'01) - Jeep Suspension Lift Kits - Jeep Suspension (rustysoffroad.com)
A bare bones kit: Rusty's XJ Cherokee 3" Spring Pack Lift Kit - XJ Cherokee ('84-'01) - Jeep Suspension Lift Kits - Jeep Suspension (rustysoffroad.com) However, you would still need: an adj track-bar, lower control arms and brake lines which makes the full kit the better option and MUCH cheaper then OME & Rubicon Express

Thoughts on planned set up
So I'm in Canada, so options are more limited due to shipping cost, exchange rare etc.
so my planned build is
Rough country 63330 kit. 4.5" complete kit.
https://www.partsengine.ca/63330-vp-...untry-384.aspx
And to deal with the ****ty ride of a short arm kit, get control arm drop brackets.
https://www.partsengine.ca/1627-vp-r...untry-384.aspx
I have not decided on sye kit yet. Hack and tap or full kit.
Total for lift and brackets taxes in is $1616 canadian. Shipped.
I was looking at a long arm kit, but I'm not willing to start cutting the jeep up. She is original and body and underside are mint and zero rust.

Max tire size for the 4.0 and auto transmission?
I know it's a broad question with a lot of caveats, but what is the max tire size a 4.0 automatic can turn reasonably. I want to be able to take it on overlanding trips, but also rock crawl(think Moab) I just bought the XJ a couple days ago, so I don't know too much about it yet. I am picking up one tons tomorrow, and I'll buy the gears when I figure out which ones I need to turn the tires.

88 XJ with 3" lift
My wifes Silver 96 XJ Automatic, my 88 XJ with 3" lift and 31 x 15 Cooper tires, 5spd, two door. The 3" lift brand is Rough Country, I didn't want any cut away done but the front lower part of the fender guard was trimmed a tad for tire clearance.

91 Cherokee Sport, bone stock. Have been doing some trails with no problems. Would like my diffs up a bit higher. Running P235/75R15s. What tire/rim combo will get me up a bit without suspension mods or fender flare mods?
