I've got some learning to do over shocks. I know I could look up how to check my required extended and compressed lengths. My question is how exact of a science is it? How much of a difference is too much?

Dukie, good info with the shackles. I was wondering why 45° is optimal, but now I understand.

I read your question wrong... but I'm glad I could help with something. I'd go with 32s for a 4.5" lift. BFG A/T if you're looking for a good all terrain. Dunlop Mud Rovers if you're looking for a mud and snow tire.

am I the only one that hates BFG A/ts?

I run Firestone Destination M/Ts and you'd have to pay me to buy anything else

Nope I despise BFG A/T's with a passion they clog in muck and suck on rocks. I will not wheel on them. The Firestone M/T's were a good tire last time I knew anyone running them, but there are better similarly priced options available.

Is money an issue? If not I'd go with Deavers or BDS both ride excellent. BDS has the best warranty IMO. If you break it they replace it no questions asked.

You make no mention of a SYE is that on the stock rear driveline? A stock rear driveshaft will cause most of those issues as well. All leaf springs flex like that on take off and under load...

get rid of those 3.5" lift shackles and you won't have that problem. Go with a taller spring and shorter shackles - your leaf springs and ujoints will thank you.

Rusty's has good springs, and Deaver is top of the pile.

Fantastic. I have the original set I installed 59,000 miles ago, originally on the back end, moved to the front about 12k ago, and they still have about 3/16" of tread at the lowest point. And they wear great - no cupping or chunking to be seen - and I drive like a madman hitting about 5 tight traffic circles to and from work every day.

Get new springs and install a traction bar, or anti wrap bar.
That's the best solution. Ruffstuff sells a kit, as well as I believe liquid iron. Lii is specifically for the xj though, and comes with a crossmember.
I dont care what shackle is on it, that has little to do with spring wrap

The shackle may not have a direct effect on spring wrap. However if his pinion angle is too high from the shackle it may cause problems on take off. 3.5 inches on a shackle is pretty drastic. In some cases you may have to add shims to return the pinion angle back to normal.
