What size tires can I safely fit on a 15x8 wheel? Stock suspension right now with a 2" lift in the future.

I want to do 30x9.5 but a lot of places are out of stock on this size. Whats the equivalent of this? 225/75/15? Won't those be to narrow for an 8" rim?

you can fit 10in wides on an 8in rim... its best to use the widest tire possible to help keep your rim safe. and stock height. on my )! i had a 2in budget boost and it had 31s without cuttin fenders.

According to http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp, playing with the numbers it would be an oddball size somewhere between a 235/80R15 and 245/80R15, which isnt all that common, Id suppose (they would go with the 30/9.5R15 designation).

Personally, it would depend on what you wanted to do for it to be considered 'safe'. You can play with that tire calculator to figure out what the widest tire that site recommends for thier brand to be road-safe. For strictly off road (not including split rims, which I have never heard of on a XJ), the only real rule is ehatever you can talk yourself into and feel comfortable with. Most of the people I wheel with figure a 7.5-8" rim (whatever stock is, thats what Im useing) is goof for nearly 11"+, i think I have 34/10.5R15 on stock rims eight now. I was able to wheel those this year at (less than) stock height with moderate bump stopping and fender trimming and sheetmetal pounding... But thats me, and the jeep doesnt see the road anymore (those were old swamper TSLs and talk about marshmallows, that thing did fine in gravel and dirt and mud but on the asphalt it went wherever it wanted).

What I mean is that when you put a wide tire on a narrow rim, it holds the bead better at low pressure but tries to puff the center of the tread out more (or rather pulls the sides in). This is ideal for off roading on a budget but horrible for on road performabce and tire wear.

Most online tire retailers seem to have rim width recommendations and most agree to a degree. Id say go with them for on road, but subtract half an inch to an inch of rim for off road. Too wide a rim on trail exposes it to damage and makes it easier to pop the bead. These are not usually issues on trail.

Btw, playing with the numbers on that site, they say you can put up to a 31/11.5R15 or so on an 8" rim. A 12.5" wide 33" tire recommends an 8.5" wide, so if you want you can make a judgment from that.

So, want to go long arms (got the green light) in Febuary. Now i like the 3 inch lift and 31's idea. So do you think it would be possible to buy a 3 inch full pack kit then get the iro or rustys long arm upgrade so i would have a long arm 3 inch lift? I just dont really want to pony up 500 for a sye and driveshaft

Anyone know of a complete three inch lift? They all seem to give something up like if you want full packs you give up control arms. My friend is looking for one that's complete for under 600. He would rather do aal to get control arms but idk if that's the best idea.

Rusty's has one without LCAs and with full packs for $438 (http://rustysoffroad.com/mm5/merchan...ode=sus_xj_kit)

Rough Country has two -

I was going to get rusty's LCAs customs (with the bend and length for 3.5" and the bend for stock rim clearance) and my cousin (does a lot of fab work and DOM) suggested just using a curved piece of DOM and heims joints.

Whereas the Rusty's will be nearly $200 shipped (also want a jonny joint on one end), and the DOM/heims should come out to around $90 (assuming I can find the heims for $20 ea), its really tempting.

Looking for pros and consm and how large a heims will I need? I found 3/4" locally for $27 ea, right or left handed, but I want to make sure they will be strong enough.

This is a trail only rig, and I dont care about road noise or having to replace them occasionally.

Anyone build them before or have any thoughts? Issues Id have if I do it?

ok I think Ive done it. I picked a company for the lift kit.
Ive heard good stuff about the IRO critical path
but they dont have the 4.5in which I wanted
they have the 4in long arm and the 5.5in long arm
I want to run 33's and hit rubicon trail and fordyce creek
can I make it on the 4in?
what width tires with the 4 and 5.5

does 1.5 inches make a difference in lift? should I cough up the extra $300 to get the 5.5?
what will the added inches affect? balance, mpg, gearing, tcase drop, etc.

also, which of these upgrades would you absolutely recommend for a budget xj?
I plan on absolutely doing the hackntap sye and driveshaft
