I am not very mechanically inclined, but am willing to learn. I want to put new wheels and tires on it to look cooler. I have looked at wheels all night and like the look of the AEV 17x8.5 Pintler Wheels. Am i stupid? What would be a good tire recommendation for this? I was trying not to lift it. if i can get some cool answers and help with this i will join the group and upload photos and input regularly. hopefully you can deal with my newness to this. the wheel color of the ones available i was going to choose was argent. i have the steel blue 2002 sport. looking forward to becoming a jeep geek.

Thanks
If your not getting wider tires I wouldn't buy an 8.5" wheel. Airing down a stock width tire on an 8.5" wheel for the beach is not a good idea. Your begging to blow a bead. Stick with a 7", 8" if you go with to a 10.5" tire. If you do go to a 10.5" tire you will need to get wheels with less offset. I ran stock wheels with a 10.5", when I aired down to fish the beach I rubbed bad, front and rear.

No worries, bud. Most of us here aren't uptight. If you only care about the looks, that's fine. Just be honest about your goal. You'll get a lot of jokes directed at you if you go that route, but it's all in good fun

Very useful and entertaining. I spend a lot of time on the beach so I'll try to save you some time and aggrivation if I can. How far do you usually air down?

usually just eyeball it. do you think the wheel size is to big, the 17x8.5. i read the one comment about not running stock tires and that is fine. i dont run on the beach much. i was told this tire size would work well and that jeep would handle better

You haven't given a tire size. The bigger the rim the harder it rides... 15" soft 8's or D windows look "cool" get some of those and go play

OK, let's forget the 17" wheels for a second. The largest tire that will fit on your current wheels without a lift is a 235/75/15. 235mm is aprox 9" wide. Putting a 9" tire with a high profile(like SUV tires) on an 8.5" rim is a bad idea. If you air that setup down you have a good chance of the bead breaking loose from the rim. You should have a wheel that is atleast 2" narrower than your tire. To give you some perspective I run a 10.5" wide tire on an 8" rim.

And I would do a 7" wheel if you don't plan to go wider than 10.5" tires.

With no lift you can't go too much wider than a 235 because the overall diameter has to stay around 29ish. Unless your going low profile, if that's the case I can't discuss such satanic behavior...
