I have a giant hole in my muffler and was going to replace it myself. The service manual states "heat the catalytic converter-to-muffler connection with a torch until the metal becomes cherry red". Is this necessary in every case? I do have 150K on the jeep.

Any advice is appreciated!

If it doesn't just pull off then yes, heat it.

I've got a new cat and muffler with tailpipe to match ready to install and have a question which may be a no-brainer but I'm somewhat new to exhaust work and don't wanna do something stupid. I'm also going to be replacing the stock exhaust manifold which has the classic crack on the y-collector as well as the front pipe in the near future. I've got those 2 parts ordered but they won't be here until next week. I'm gonna have a shop put the header and front pipe on when they get here since it's 15deg-F in my snowy parking lot and I don't feel like getting frostbite on my fingers. I'm gonna do the cat, muffler and tailpipe myself. Should I wait until after I get the header and front pipe done to install the rest or should I just go put it on this weekend? I'm slightly worried about causing damage to the rusty header and front pipe when I take the old muffler and cat apart. The only holes are in the old cat/muffler, other than the crack in the manifold collector. I'm prepared to cut the cat/muffler & stuff off with a cut-off wheel/grinder. Am I worried about nothing or is this a legitimate concern? I don't wanna drive around for 2 weeks with a loud, half-destroyed, half-new exhaust system...

thanks folks, that's pretty much what I was thinkin - I'll suck it up and wait. I also realized that the kit I got didn't come with a 2.5 clamp for the hanger on the tail end and if I let the shop do the header and front pipe first, they'll put a new one on the end of the front pipe and then I'll have it for when I do the rest cuz I already have a band clamp for that junction on the new stuff. Plus I won't have to worry about doing any damage to the old, rusty stuff for the week in between. It's just hard to wait when you have all those sweet new parts just beggin to get put on!

I know that new part feeling Haha! Also you can do a dyno check and calculate your mpg for a "before and after" so you can see how much you actually gain
