I have looked at websites and found part numbers that match from 1997 and 1999 so buyers beware if these are not the same, and I am internally bashing my head trying to figure out where I screwed up if I did.

OK I have a finding on the difference in the 99 exhaust manifold and the pre 99. The exhaust openings are smaller on the 99's, and it is a square shape. The ports coming out of the head may be the same, but the gasket used on the 99 is a steal gasket vs. the mesh type on the 97, and it actually closes off the portion of the port that is left exposed by the actual exhaust manifold. So in my eyes that makes the 97's manifold better flowing , only until it reaches the collector, where it is smaller than the 99, in fact I think the entire pipe run thereafter is a little smaller. So why the trade off? why the restriction on purpose at the exit of the head, but then the better flow with two downpipes and bigger exhaust pipe after the collector? No wonder the part numbers for headers and aftermarket manifolds were the same, the gasket is the key factor here. And also the two downpipes I guess. So I ask the all knowing exhaust expert , which manifold is better? which exhaust system is better? Why would jeep want to close the port from the head off like that? If I had good equipment I would somehow take the 97 manifold, which by looks rival most aftermarket headers, and modify it to fit the two downpipes, obviously two downpipes into a slightly bigger exhaust pipe is better, but the smaller manifold openings would lose that gain or not?

Pre-cat Y-pipe 2000 XJ (5 O2 sensors)
I have purchased Banks torque tubes (stock outlet pipe size), monster exhaust (2.5") and a Magnaflow direct fit catylitic converter. I need the pre-cats (y tube). But I have only found two options, Magnaflow, maybe you get what you pay for but they are expensive and a set from DEC. I have never heard of this company and they are not registered with the BBB. Just wondering what some of you have bought and any reviews or suggestions. Entire exhaust system is worn out and leaking in several places. Not looking for a huge horsepower gain and I do not want to lose any torque just something that will work well with what I have already bought and keep the check engine light off.

Does anybody run the Gibson swept side exhaust cat back (part #617200 on Summit) on their '97 or 98 XJ? Looking to get one, but it says it won't fit the 97 or 98 models with hanger welded tailpipe. Is their anyway to get around it (sawzall)?

california catalytic converter questions
My 1997 jeep cherokee sport 4.0 il6 from Arizona passed the emissions test here in californja but they said i had a 49 state catalytic converter and needed a California catalytic converter before i could get the smog certificate. What is a good California certified cat that will fit my rig? Also will I have to cut and wield it in? I would go look but I am away on business trip right now and the jeep is at home. People talk about having to spend$700-$1000 dollars to get cali cats but I am seeing some magnaflows for around $142 on Amazon that say cali legal, am i missing something ...thanks!

Recently bought a 94 Jeep GCL ZJ 4.0L I6 w/90k.
Working out small things.
Had some thumping at rear (slow, rough road), re-hung exhaust a little better, looking into hatch bumpers (but that's another story).
Noticed front exhaust hanger is similar to rear - bent rod welded in front of cat to pipe and bolted to an offset rubber hanger.
Short of welding or changing major components (no leaks) is there a standard existing hanger that would bolt around pipe and bolt into the hanger (to the side of pipe). I can picture one (as on engineer) but haven't seen one out there yet.

I'm running this 2.5" system with an OEM converter. Sounds loud to me and with no backoff noise. It was free shipping when I bought it. Looks like free shipping now.

Awesome. Roughly how much would the cherry bomb extreme cost? Also if I did that would I still need to replace the cat? I don't know a whole lot on exhausts. I'm still learning. Thank you for your help!
