I've got these on my 99 (with no cat) and it's too loud, IMO. It's not a daily driver so I deal with it, but Im still wanting to quiet it down a bit. I want to put a cat back on it and hope that tones it down a bit.

Just place an order for this one. Hope it quiets it down a little and gets my MPG back.

Hey everyone the exhaust on my 1997 jeep Cherokee needs to be replaced being the Cat is shot...gonna replace it headers back and was looking for some recommendations for a system that sounds a little throatier than stock. I have been looking at borla, magnaflow, flow master, etc...but I'm not sure what to go with and if there are better ones for the price. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Check.performance-curve.com. you are on the right track, with the three that you mentioned. It's more about what you want and what you are looking to spend. I would say you pretty much got it spot on from most expensive (Borla) to cheapest (flowmaster). I'm cheap, I went with flowmaster... I'm happy. If I could afford it I would have went with borla. Anything will be throatier (is that even a word?) than stock. Also, whether or not if you want larger pipes. I'm running an APN header, 2.5" pipe,Thunderbolt spun cat and FM Super 44 (both from performance-curve). I think forum members get a discount, don't remember.

Cat came today. Went on easy and this one has a bung for the O2 sensor. No more CEL so hopefully I'll get my MPG back.

Took the bark out of the exhaust tone too. It was just too loud before. Has a nice rumble at idle now and moderate tone going down the road. MUCH nicer. I was a little ashamed out in town before because it was so loud. Sounds real nice now.

Thanks to those that have posted the info on these cats.

Just doing some preliminary research and wanting some input as to why there's not much talk about Doug Thorley's headers for the XJ's? Is it just the cost/benefit ratio or something else?

A 99 (and assuming 98) one-piece XJ header, at least the one, I have isn't far off a performance header. It's got fairly big tubes and no bad restrictions anywhere. Doug's and other performance headers, seem to make the engine sound cooler, but it's not going to be like throwing long tubes on a SBC or LS engine where you can expect to pick up 15-30hp.

Don't think there is much talk because the $500+ price point far outweighs the benefits, unless you need to replace your header anyways. You could buy a GM 5.3 for $500. Just saying.

'preciate it Velcro. I figured the cost/benefit ratio was the biggest issue.

Default 2001 Cherokee Sport Cat replacement

Hello -- I apologize if this has been covered already -- but I need to replace the catalytic converter to get past emissions I'm afraid, and I'd like to do it myself. I have searched all over the interweb and can't find any how-to type material...so I'm hoping one of might help! I'm working on a 2001 Cherokee Sport, 4.0L v6 (inline). Thanks in advance!

Which cat? I'm not sure how many your 2001 has, but I'm guessing at least 2. The downstream cat seems to be the one that goes bad most often. I'd make sure though, catalytic converters aren't too cheap.

Here's a decent video I found. Not a lot out there for good written instructions, mostly "ehow-like" garbage.

If you can't watch the video or it doesn't help enough.

1. Locate the downstream cat right before the muffler. Remove any factory clamps.

2. Using a sawzall, hacksaw, or angle grinder with cutoff wheel, cut all the way through right before the muffler. Do this first since otherwise the cat will be flopping around, making it hard to cut off. Leave yourself enough of the straight pipe to be able to weld/clamp to.

3. Cut right before the cat. Leaving enough room to weld/clamp to. Just let it fall off.

(stolen pictures - djb383)

4. Work with clamps, extra pipe, and adapters until your new cat is properly in place.

5. Tighten down clamps or preferably weld in and remove clamps.

If you're exhaust isn't too rusty and stuck together, you might be able to get away with making slits down the ends of the tubing with an angle grinder instead of cutting all the way through.

Also, if I was you, I would probably just take it to an exhaust shop, sometimes it's not worth the price of tools or time with a hacksaw. Should only be around $50-100 if you bring the parts. Still there's a first time for everything.

(I took this from another thread to show the setup on my Cherokee as this is similar)

Thanks man -- this helps. And you're right, I have multiple cats -- 3 it looks like (2 connected at the manifold (upstream - bank 1 and bank 2), and the downstream unit (maybe this is a resonator?). The only o2 sensors I see are on the upstream cats; so those are the ones I was going to replace.
