Stylin Cat Back System
Here is what I wound up doing for the wife's rig.
1 Walker SS Quiet-Flow muffler The Bay $65
Called AFE spoke with Scott (great service) and ordered just the 2.5 SS pipe for $140
Install local shop $60
Factory Quiet, Yes
No noticeable performance/mileage gains.
So $265 for a SS cat back exhaust installed. Everybody's Happy!

Muffler. But I took a look at it a few hours ago because I had a second to work on my jeep and I decided "**** it" and loosened the u bolts so I can rotate the muffler back into position (with a wood mallet because it was rusted to the exhaust pipe) and it's pretty much in the right position. The u bolts were pretty loose in the first place so I tightened them up a lot and now I am just keeping an eye out for a condensation leak because that's where the carbon monoxide would also come out (right?) but for now the leak is gone. When I was using the mallet I heard stuff in the muffler start to jingle about but like a lot of little pieces of stuff and after I finished with the muffler I turned on the jeep and revved it a bit and a ton of rust came out of the exhaust pipe I noticed (which would make sense because it was a neglected car) and the jingling in the muffler is nearly gone. So yeah. Hopefully problem solved

I have a jeep Cherokee with a stock muffler... I want to make it louder and sound good but only want to replace the muffler... What muffler would you recommend?

It passed the smog check last June and I haven't done anything that could damage it that I know of. The stuff that came out seems like it was from the muffler because the rust bits are curved like the sides of the muffler. And when I tapped on the muffler with the wood mallet to break the rust between the tailpipe and the muffler to adjust its position I started to hear the jingling of those pieces only in the muffler. I didn't use the mallet on the cat what so ever.

He is saying he will fail smog because you have to have a muffler of some type to pass. Smog is a relative term to passing emissions. Visually and figuratively.

No, I don't lick fish.
For instance, I'm running a Thrush Turbo - cheap muffler (about 35 bucks) from local autoparts stores. It sounds great! Nice mellow growl at idle from outside and a low, but semi-aggressive tone from outside - almost like a small muffled diesel. Inside, it sounds like a stock muffled 8 cylinder. Not loud at all (Keep in mind, I have no carpet).
I'm going to be switching to a Flowmaster Super 40. Loud inside, loud outside, I've heard from some that it will drone on the inside at interstate speeds. Idle sounds like a small v8, aggressive sound at acceleration, but not obnoxiously loud at all.
What I had for a while was straight-piped exhaust. Loud everywhere, through idle, acceleration, and interstate speeds.... obnoxiously loud when you accelarate hard. Sounds like a cummins under normal acceleration.
Sidenote: My pipe from the downpipe back is 2.5"... I've heard other straight pipe exhausts using the factory diameter that sound like crap.
Hope this helps a little.

How much louder are you looking for? Are you wanting loud inside the jeep, or loud outside the jeep only?
