Cheapest Possible Way To Get More Groan
Good day
First of all sorry if this question has been asked before!
So I'm a college student and of course that means I want a loud exhaust. I'm in the process of adding a lift and tires to my XJ and I think a more aggressive sound would fit the package perfectly.
So, my question is.
What is the CHEAPEST possible way to get more groan (besides cutting out the cat of course) out of your XJ?
I've been reading up a bit and there are a lot of different options.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks you

Also, don't go any further with talking about cat removal on here. You will get shut down as it's against forum rules and federal law.
If I were you, I'd wait until you're done with the lift and tires to do your exhaust. Save up some money, and bring your jeep to a shop with a new 2.5" cat and a bigger tip. Ask for 2.5" pipe from the manifold back. It will be super loud, and it will sound alright. I'd still recommend a muffler so you don't get pulled over like I did, but it's your jeep. Do what you want.

You could swap a different muffler in. Thrush welded mufflers are pretty cheap and give a pretty good sound. Otherwise, replace it with a piece of pipe.

Yeah I'm aware of the rules and regs and planning on keeping it street legal! I think a DynoMax or one of those mufflers will work for now! Planning on new headers soon so will change everything out once the finances agree!
Thanks!

Hey so I'm pretty well knowing when it comes to exhaust questions. So instead of making a new thread for your question post it here and I or someother people will answer it for you...or pm me if u need a question answered right now like an emergency. Other then that I'm mostly on everyday. So post up some questions. From what to look for in a new muffler. Or to troubleshooting questions. Thanks all lets see those posts
Currently, I live were they don't require emissions testing so I'd like to run stock less cat to a quiet muffler.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions

Can't help you with the cat situation (forum rules), but there are plenty of quiet mufflers out there. Walker, or even a generic muffler will do the job.

don't run cat less, not only is it illegal but it'll run rich most likely. I accidentally ripped off my rear o2 sensor and my jeep ran like garbage before I got the new one on, also will throw a code and make the engine light stay on.

Here ya go man..... few video samples for you.
First is 2.5" pipe from manifold back w/ OE style cat, 2.5" straight pipe out to rear bumper.
Next is same 2.5" pipe from manifold back w/ high flow cat and Thrush Turbo ($30 at auto parts store) muffler w/ 2.5" going out to rear bumper.
What I will eventually have is a Flowmaster Super 40 and hopefully a better header. I already have the muffler, just lookin' for a chance to put it on.

Illegal? I don't need to go through emissions here so I wasn't worried. but to keep the forum policy I will ask for the cleanest and least noisy option for my '90 XJ. with todays options to program, tuning doesn't seem to be a problem.
my plan for my XJ is to keep it simple, clean, tuned correctly and quiet.
I do appreciate all the input. this site has been very helpful.
Thanks to all
Less sound, More ground. I like quiet.

It doesn't ****ing matter if you don't have emissions. It is federally illegal to remove. You bring it up one more time you will be removed from the forum.

Here ya go man.... There's literally no reason to remove a catalytic converter nowadays. Plenty of high-flow catalytics on this page that won't break the bank, barely restricts flow at all, and keeps you legal. Seriously man, check it out.

I understood the legalities, but I needed to understand the exhaust system.
Basslicks provided me exactly the info I needed.
you won't need to worry yourself any further
