I have a 95 Cherokee and my stock muffler totally came apart. I went to the parts store and bought a cherry bomb and installed it and it sounds great. After giving it testdrive to see how it sounded on the road I pulled into my carport and noticed oil pouring out from under my jeep. I was wondering if it had anything to do with the exhaust work just done?

So my tailpipe sheared off at the muffler while I was manhandling it to install shackle relocators. I figured its as good a time as any to do a complete exhaust overhaul and plan on fabricating it from the manifold back. I have a few questions though:
1. Where can I find the proper flange for the downpipe to connect to the manifold?
2. Is it worth going 2.5" throughout or just cat-back or should i just keep it at 2.25"?
3. Does anyone have any ideas/experience for routing the tailpipe due to the decreased clearance from the shackle relocation?

2. Is it worth going 2.5" throughout or just cat-back or should i just keep it at 2.25"?

My exhaust is 2.5" from the crossover tube back and I find my motor to be a little more torquey than OEM XJs I've driven with the 2.25" exhaust.

Custom exhaust and muffler decision
Hi everyone! So I need to redo the factory exhaust on “lil blue” my 90 XJ. It is fully stock and rusted and banged up. So my plan is to remove the cat and muffler and go straight pipe to muffler to tailpipe. I have been slowly getting parts together for the build. So far I have a O:E replacement tailpipe section from Napa and I have a 7.5 foot section straight pipe that is 2.5 inch OD. So I don’t really have to worry about emissions anymore since I registered it as a classic vehicle in my state. So trying to decide on a good muffler. I have read some posts about Thrush welded series and I was almost sold on that but I heard a guy on YouTube do a flowmaster super 40 and it sounded really awesome. I did see he installed a new high flow cat and I don’t plan on using a cat. I am only worried about popping sound at high rpm. I had a 97 GMC with a 5.7 I put the super 40 muffler on and it was dual in single out, well when I accelerated heavy it sounded horrible like a rice rocket. It popped really bad. Never did that with factory exhaust so I assumed it was the muffler. Anyway I didn’t want pop sound that for the XJ project. Any thoughts or opinions on this are appreciated. I am going for a little louder and honestly noise level doesn’t bother me. Thanks again!

I'm gonna be ordering a new muffler and having my mechanic weld it on soon since my Jeeps in for a few serious issues and figured since its there I might as well.
anybody know if this muffler will be a pretty direct fit where the stock one goes? it's 2.25" with a center in / offset out so I'm sure it should go in good I just want a second opinion. I don't wanna make it more work than it needs to be. should I go up to a 2.5" ?

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to most of this stuff here n I'm jus looking for a little advice. so not too long ago i bought myself a 1997 xj sport, threw on some new 31's n fixed up a few of the minor quirks she had to get her running good now I'm jus looking forward to what i should add next?
It'll still be my daily driver so i know theres some stuff i shouldn't do to it for safety reasons but i just want to know what are some good mods to start with? I've been looking at a 3.5 to a 4.5 inch lift or a nice bumper to start off with
Any suggestions or tips?? Let me know

The Thrush Welded muffler, some say, is the poor man's Flowmaster. I can distinctly notice a difference, but it's not a bad muffler for the price. I'm currently running a Thrush Turbo in mine and it sounds decent (check my YouTube channel for some exhaust clips - link in my sig). I'll be swapping it out for a Flowmaster as soon as I get the time to weld it up though.

...like this lol
Depends on what kind of sound you're looking for. Here's the sister to this thread which has a lot of sound clips of different exhaust setups for the XJ

Thought I'd stick this in for reference. These are the dimensions for the stock muffler off of my '96.
inlet- 2.25" center
outlet- 2.25" offset
oal- 24.5"
width- 9.75"
height- 4.5"
oval

That will fit with the factory piping perfectly. If you want to go to 2.5", I'd highly recommend swapping out the pipe to 2.5" from AT LEAST the cat to the end. 2.5" will give you more resonance without negatively affecting performance.

thanks, ill be sending him some 2.25" exhaust pipe his way to since he does work outve his home garage and i doubt theres any on hand. know a good source for that stuff? I tried Amazon since i have free two day shipping with prime but they didnt seem to have what i needed. (surprisingly)
OR, you can get a pre-bent kit from http://performance-curve.com/84-01ch...ailpipe-1.aspx with your choice of muffler.
