I have a new felpro manifold gasket

Do I need to use any sort of gasket dressing on it? I have a can of copper spray gasket sealer but I don't want to use it for the only reason that I already own it

Nope put the gasket on dry. I used the same gasket and have had no issues in the past 10k miles that it's been on

You should be fine on a '96. The '96 I had had the O2 sensor before the cat. Computer doesn't even know if the cat is there or not. If you're going to hollow the cat out, you should weld in a section of pipe to help direct exhaust flow or you can notice a drop in torque.

Dear Exhaust Genius,

I just purchased a fully stock 2001 XJ and I want to do a full exhaust header-to-tip upgrade cats and all. I want to be cali compliant due to being active navy and there being a good chance I will be back in SD in about a year. Do I have any options with all parts costing under 1k? I am looking for better tone (not much louder) and some performance gains. Thank you, Great Sage.

I work on all my stuff pretty much, but exhaust is one thing I leave to glen. He's done work on my Cherokee and Comanche and he's cheap, but does amazing work. It's not worth the effort for the few dollars I'd save to do it myself and I know it wouldn't turn out as nice.

I wonder if this would be a good deal to hold me over for a full proper setup?

That would more than hold you over. The FM Super 40 is a very desired exhaust setup.... especially with a 2.5" pipe.
