They really do help. I got a good amount of low end torque, but I'm still carburated so there is a difference.
Of course, the exhaaut didn't help near as much as the head porting and valve job.

Yes theres gains..not much but they are there! Maybe 1 mpg..possibly 2 if your cats clogged?
The biggest gain you will see if from a mandrel bent front downpipe...if you look at yours its crushed down to like 1.75"...get a nice 2.5" madrel bent one..not crush/pressure bent! Theres ripples created by pressure/crush bending which cause turbulence which is bad for flow.
You get some more scoot out of it and possibly some mileage gains but nothing drastic! Then again we are talking jeeps lol I come from a whole other world! I come from 500whp+ 2jz's, where flow is everything!
I ran straight piped for about a week. When I got my exhaust made with a HF cat & my magnaflow..it sounded nice but felt no faster/slower! I picked up no extra mileage either..then again I have a renix so my cats not helping anything other than cleaning up the exhaust lol!
I'd get the front pipe redone, then do a cat back..if your cats good leave it be..it flows more than enough and add whatever muffler suits you!

I looked at a few aftermarket OE style manifolds and newer designs such as an ATP exhaust manifold ... description shows Improved Aftermarket "Challenge Y" Design Collector ... ?
The cross-over pipe was once repaired .. there is a sharp ~90 deg bend near the bottom where it starts to cross
The cat and o2 sensors and muffler were replaced some 2 to 3 years ago ... After the previous muffler was split near the bottom it was replaced with a sturdier stainless steel high flow type.
I am thinking of redoing the entire exhaust and keeping parts that will work .. but am uncertain of going to 2.5 inch tubing ...
Once in a long while, the PCM throws a P0420, (usually at low engine rpms under 750 ...)
Gas mileage could be improved ... poor fuel economy can sometimes be exhaust related.
____ as for the P0420 code ...
Mode 6 non-continuous monitors show test $11 and $21 failed ..
Test ID: $11* O2-S1-B1 failed
Test ID:* = $ 21 ( Catalyst sensor has 1 to 1 switch ratio) failed
Apparently the upstream monitor is having some difficulty with half cycles tests ... i.e. testing for the sensor’s switching from threshold voltage rate. (frequency) ... which may be effecting the cat monitor ... comparing the downstream sensor’s frequency to the upstream sensor ..

As stated in NC you have to have a muffler of some sort, and whats wrong with motorcycles?
I have a Leo Vince slip on on my 05 cbr600rr and that is pretty loud. I can only imagine how loud yours is. My feelings are loud pipes really do save lives when your on a crotch rocket. Haha

Motorcycles, for one create much less congestion, and two use much less fuel and create way less 'pollution' because of it.
They have different rules because they aren't cars, and are different. Very different. I hope some day laws change a bit more in regards to two wheelers.
Someone also stated the safety issue with loud pipes. If you can hear me loud and clear, maybe you wont 'accidently' merge on top of me or pull out in front of me.
A fewgood years ago. I was hit and drug 5 block by a car who didn't stop at a stop sign. Maybe of I was pipeless they driver would have seen me. I'm lucky I survived.

Ya theres a different sound though! Flowmasters are chambered & give a more machiney type of sound to me...while the mangaflow is pure motor..nothing changes the tone!
Once the magnaflow is broken in then yes it will get louder! You need to get the right magnaflow though...most people get the oval muffler...looks like the stock one and those are to quite!
I posted a part number on this page or the last..look it up. Its for a 16" muffler...I choose to go with 1 18" long one just to make sure it was quiet but the 16" should be just fine!
This is what my exhaust looks like...although this isn't my actual picture!

my setup
hey guys, im running stock cat, flowmaster 40 series and 2.5" pipe all the out with a stainless tip, sounds good, deep, and throaty. Although, I do have to put my rear hitch on so I may have to ditch the tip and make it a turn down before the bumper
I highley recomend this setup, in additioin to my K&N filter I have seen a bit of better throttle response and and mid rpm gain.
