If you wanna check for leaks..grab a can a seafoam..suck 1/3 of it SLOWLY through the brake booster vacuum line and let it sit for a few.
Start it watch for smoke...when you find the leak then your there ya go...if no leaks then come back and I'll help ya figure it out!
Plus the seafoam will clean up the motor some..its a win win situation lol

How do you go about removing a heavily rusted manifold on the XJ? ... soak and apply heat ... an impact wrench?
I have been thinking a while about purchasing an electric impact wrench ... appears some of the nuts and studs may have problems removing without breaking off. Perhaps an impact wrench might help prevent applying too much torque and twisting the engine block studs off?

Might look into that ... closest auto parts is around ~30 miles ... I remember seeing Seafoam somewhere online ..
Also considering replacing or refurbishing the exhaust manifold and replacing the cross-over pipe ...

If the Bolts are rusted its going to break whether its a impact wrench or a regular ratchet......
Truth is alot of impact wrenches wont remove heavily torqued bolts so you will end up breaking the bolt free with your ratchet anyway

Also just a update of my exhaust... Still running the same header (dont remember the name and its all covered up so no way of telling now)
i have 2.5" all the way back the only thing in there is a 20" glasspack wanted a shorter one but got this one for a steal so went with it........Good sound is loud gets real loud inside anything over 2500rpm.......
Gonna be hitting it with a water hose here shortly to help the insulation break out of there lol

Soak in some kind of fluid... maybe WD-40 something of that nature.....

I never have used impact wrench only a pry bar, using less torque, has a tendency to twist rusted metal ... whereas an impact wrench, providing a rapid impact & more torque, is sometimes able to break a corrosion bond between metal pieces.

I've never used electric one that could work if its not too much...also while your on you manifold...try to get new injectors and a 99 or older manifold.. It will help out also while you have out your manifold try to get better headers and a 2.5 in down piped all the way out the back you will be happy with thoea gains !!!!!...as far as those rusty bolts get a torch and take them out that should work great .....if u need intakes and injectors go check in. With programbo on here he sells everything
What do you mean by "better headers"
Why do I need 2.5" pipe ... you mean all the way from the header to the end of the tail pipe ?

Like apn headers and no a 2.5in downpipe off the headers...it will add better mpg gains hp your o2 will be fine

Shows the APN header uses a 2 1/4" exit ...
Your trying to give the exhaust a little more breathing room?
I found a Walker Exhaust 55277 ... appears to be 2.25 inch ... factory compressed pipe ..
