Whoops I meant TPS not the MAF. I forgot we dont have MAFs. I get confused with my firebird a lot. You can check it with a multimeter though (the TPS).

Can the ECU adjust timing on a motor with a distributor cap and rotor?

To add some fuel to this fire I have been running my 87 for the past month or more with the o2 sensor snapped in half and dangling by the front diff. Runs fine warm, cold, long distance (4 hour drive yesterday) or short.

The ECU is in open loop mode. Meaning your engine will run but other sensors like the MAP are overcompensating for the lack of O2. Problem is that the other sensors will eventually fail due to overworking. Our ECUs adjust injector and ignition timing, the distributer just places the spark to the wires.

I would guess cracked exhaust manifold. It sounded like an exhaust leak, I'm assuming that is what your referring to.

yea. i noticed it happened after all my exhaust hangers broke and the exhaust was resting on my cross member. but at the same time my distributor cap broke so i had to replace that. i didnt know if since the exhaust bounced around a bit that if my exhaust manifold cracked or i put my distributor on wrong and i was getting a misfire.

It doesn't take much to crack these manifolds.
