I got bored yesterday during lunch and made a bit of a mud shield in about 5 minutes... consisted of three pieces of aluminum bent up and riveted together and mounts where two existing splash guard holes exist. This should work for the few times a year we get mud here in AZ.

Well I hope it works anyways, lol... I think I've had to change my alternator at least once a year?!--- because it turns into a mud cake and dies a horible death >.>

Splash shields are perfect if never going through deeper mud. They do nothing for when you're submerged. I'm now on my 5th'or 6th alternator (I lost count already) but luckily I have a good relationship with the guys at the Advance near me. They don't even look at it, just swap it out under warranty. I make sure to remove the sticker with the part number on it, rinse it through the best that I can, clean the casing with brake cleaner and reapply the sticker. It's not 100% perfect but atleast it only looks like I went down a dusty road instead of a mud pit so they don't take a 2nd look. I tried a quick splash shield with a license plate that I saw another member do. Cool idea, cheap if you have them, no modification needed but again, if you're submerged, nothing will help.

my 99 XJ came from the factory with a shield, a large piece of rubber mat under the entire front engine, from frame rail to frame rail. It used those plastic "christmas tree" push-in retainers to hold it up...only lasted about 5 years before too many holes tore and it hung down, I ripped it out.
