Axels
Hey everyone I have been wanting to do a 4x4 conversion for a long time now
I have all the tools to do it and I would most likely end up getting the parts from a junkyard so hope fully it will be less expensive...
I also know it would be easier to just buy a different xj with 4x4
But this has sentimental value lol
I was just asking advice on what I should get for the conversion like what size front axel do I need to change my back axel
And hopefully I can find a Cherokee 4x4 transmission if I have to I'll rebuild it
Thankyou!
I own a 99 2 door with 31's and no lift(yet!!)

me and my friend just finished converting his comanche to a 4x4, it was very easy. just get a dana30 front axle there cheap and strong enough for 31. get 4x4 trans with the t-case they bolt right in we even used his same cross member. then all you need is a shorter rear driveshaft or make your own out of the 2wd shaft like we did. this was on a 89 but i figure its the same for 99s. My 4x4 conversion wasnt that expensive. $500 base vehicle with $300 parts jeep (minus whatever i sold from it) and another ~$600 on new parts/better parts. That was the initial cost of it then i got the itch and have since seen 2 lifts and various other stuff. Kind of a downward spiral from the conversion.
edit: new parts included tune up, all oils, clutch, clutch hydraulics, a few bushing and seals here or there, and the other small things that nickle and dime a project.

Look for a parts jeep or someone that is parting out their XJ to grab parts from. Junkyard is the most expensive methods. Be patient and wait for good deals, the swap can be done in steps.
Any chance you life around MI? i have everything to convert an auto XJ to 4x4 that I want out of my shed
