Cherokee XJ 2.1 - New motor
Good night,
I'm new here in the forum, I'm from Portugal and I have a Jeep
Cherokee XJ 2.1td 1989.
Unfortunately, bad news arrived, the engine broke down, and I
decided to replace the engine with a more powerful, maybe one
2.5TD, 2.7TD, 3.3td.
I would like to help me know which indicated the engine to put
in the jeep, without having to change the gearbox, and liked to
give me some advice.
Thank you,
Bruno Pimenta

Without changing the transmission, and wanting to keep a diesel in it, you're probably stuck with the 2.1. That is, assuming you have a manual transmission...I don't really know much of anything about the automatics. The 2.1 came with the AX-5 manual, same as the 2.5 and 2.8 gas engines. The 2.5 diesel offered in later XJs used the AX-15 manual, same as the 4.0 gas engine.
So if you swap in a different engine, you'll be swapping in a different transmission too.

To go to a 2.5L VM Motori you'll need the new transmission, engine computer, and all underhood wiring. Unless you want to do that you might as well find another Renault
