Are you aware of the available opening directly in front of the one in front of the OEM air box? There's a rectangular plate held on by screw. Remove it and you get access to air outside the engine bay. The opening is at least as large if not a bit larger than the air box opening. Before I did the cowl mod I connected the two openings using a piece of rectangular heater duct.
Ha you found that opening also, I found it back in 2000. I was making a 3 hour drive every weekend and would use just over half a tank of gas (I should have kept track of the mileage) one way, so in looking under the hood to see if there was a way to get more air into the air box is when I discovered the plate and removed it, my next trip I used just over a 1/4 tank of gas, I should have kept this setup.
Now I have to buy the air box since mine was thrown out. If you know anyone that has one please let me know.

They also apparently did away with that extension on the air box knowing the gas mileage would decrease.

I highly doubt anyone actually sees a gain or decline from any filter i also doubt fuel mileage is recorded accurately to be of any use as info one way or the other
I do know of I don't like k&n but I have one also run a 3" dry filter

I'm in the process of doing a bfh filter so itl share filters with my Cummins. These probly still flow decent plugged up with moon dust.

if conditions are very dry and dusty I will swap out filters daily if I don't run my jeep much or on the street and in wet Conditions it will be a month maybe two between filters.

I got rid of the box for ease of maintenance and I didn't trust the panel filter though

If need be you can modify the box and run a tube from it to the inner fender where the air is cooler.
Generally speaking, the K&N filter will flow more air than the stock filter/airbox, but that's largely irrelevant since the intake manifold, throttle body, head, exhaust, etc. are usually the limiting flow factors and not the filter.

Yup, especially when you've got the throttle open enough to actually want to make some power.

I agree on your points with the T.B., manifold head and exhaust. I just order a new throttle body (not a milled one) from https://www.partsgeek.com/. once the new T.B. and factory air box are installed I'll post the (hopefully) increase in gas mileage. If you look at my older post my 88 Cherokee connected directly to the square opening behind the headlight. I'm going to do the same thing on my 96 once I get the air box installed.

First off I'm GLAD the link to the air filter assembly is working out.
You may have just answered the $64,000 question as to WTH that opening was for. Years back when I had asked about it no one knew.

First I believe Chrysler along with all car manufacturers are being paid off by the gas companies to restrict gas mileage on vehicles.
Chrysler bought AMC Jeep in 1987, so AMC parts were used until they were used up then Chrysler replacement parts were used as my 1988 confirms, it has AMC and Chrysler parts of which the Chrysler parts gave out first. Most likely Chrysler realized they could reduce the MPG figures by blocking this hole which would be less expensive than changing the tooling in order to eliminate the opening. In doing this in my opinion Chrysler got a kick back from the gas companies. As in my previous post when I removed the cover on the 96 my fuel mileage increased.
