Actually 4.56s put you close to stock with an auto and 33s, 4.10s with a 5 speed.

it would be close to stock if the jeep came with the tow package which would have come with 3.73 gears, otherwise it came with 3.55s auto.

My auto came with 3.55s, after regearing to 4.56 with 33s I've gained a considerable amount of low end power. If it were close to stock, my speedo wouldn't need a new cog to read correctly either. It's anywhere from 4 to 11mph off of my true speed.

Disclaimer: I understand the charts pertain to automatics.

Those gear charts are for a 1 to 1 ratio, or 4th gear in a manual and 3 gear in an automatic! If you are going to use them multiply the answer by .75 for an automatic and .79 for the manual to get the correct rpm for 65 mph.

With 4.56 gears and 33 inch tires an auto would be turning 2263.5rpms at 65mph.
With 4.56 gears and 33 inch tires a manual would be turning 2384.22rpms at 65mph.

With 4.11s and 33 inch tires and a manual 2148.8 rpms.
With 4.11s and 33 inch tires and an auto 2040 rpms.

always overgear. you always hear people complaining about not going low enough. but never hear about people complaining they went too low. in my opinion 4.10s are a waste of time and money. i had 5.38s with 35s and an auto. it would cruise at 75 for days at a time and get 15 mpg doing so.

Wow, you guys have given me a TON of help and information on not just my situation, but gearing in general.

When the time comes, I think I'm going to go with 33s and 4.56s gears. Or 35s and 4.88s haha. I'm try to convince myself not to go bigger than 33s, but I'm sure you all know how that goes!

I agree with overgearing.

Well, if you know that those charts are for a one to one ratio, why didn't you state that in your post! Lots of people on this website don't understand that if they put 4.56 gears in their Cherokees running 33 inch tires that they're not going to be turning 3018 rpms at 65mph in overdrive.
Those charts don't pertain to automatics any more than they pertain to manuals. They do pertain to a 1 to 1 ratio or 4th gear in an AX15 manual and 3rd gear in an AW4 automatic or any other direct 1 to 1 transmission.

Good point.

I also forgot on this site you have to over-explain because no one can do any research on their own.

Truthfully, the more I think about what I was trying to do with that, it makes less and less sense. Oh well.

So the basic understanding here is 4.56 gears with 33's on an auto.

I regeard with 411's. Mine is an automatic with 32's on it. I debated the same issue but I knew I would never put anything larger than 32's thus the 411's. Having said that, if I were going to go with 33 inch tires I would have installed the 4.56 gears. With 32 inch tires going from 3.55 to 4.11 made a world of difference.

Yes, for a ratio similar to stock.

Personally, I'd go 4.88 for the extra power/torque.

i just went from 3.55 to 4.11 on 31's with an auto. TOTALLY worth the regear. night and day difference, that being said i used to run 4.56 on 31" tires. did not like that one bit, 4.56 would have better suited 33" tires.

my buddy runs 4.88 on 33's in a 4cyl manual YJ and he really likes it, feels like you would do well with 4.56s in his yj if it had the power of a 4.0L though.

what affect does regearing have on fuel economy? I'm upgrading from 31s to 33s soon and after reading this its clear i need to regear. but i heard that regearing makes it harder on gas. and bigger tires make it harder on gas as it is. I'm still new with the concept of regearing and such, so any advice is appreciated

With bigger tires and all you need to regear to bring the drivetrain back closer to stock specs. If you want to go up to 33's like you mentioned, you would be able to tell a difference in power, torque and MPG by rehearing your axles to like 4.56 or something
