How can I tell if my oil pick up tube came free of the oil pump in my transfer case?

How can I tell if my oil pick up tube came free of the oil pump in my transfer case?
I did an AA SYE recently and now my passenger side transmission hump gets hot after driving. The plastic on the center console is hot to the touch after driving on the freeway. The car drives great and there are no weird sounds coming from the transfer case but I was wondering if that would explain the heat? Maybe I'm just paranoid. I did the lift and larger tires at the same time and don't have a trans cooler yet but it's only 40 degrees out.
Would the transfer case fail immediately if that happened?

i think the only way to tell would be to take it back apart. just for a little peace of mind my tranny tunnel gets way hot but i dont have carpet either. i think as long as your sure you put the pick up tube into the pump when you put it back together youll be fine.

I definitely put it in, I'm just paranoid because I didn't have a new o-ring to put in. Now that the trans tunnel is only hot in the passenger side right across from the ebrake I'm just trying to figure out what it could be.

What o-ring are you suppose to replace when doing the sye?

I was talking about the o-ring in the oil pump that holds the pick up tube in place. Mine didn't seem to hold the pick up tube in place very well. Usually they don't have to be replaced but my imagination has me thinking mine fell loose after I installed the cover.

Would I have been able to complete a 40 mile drive on the highway without the TC failing if the pick up tube wasn't attached?
I have driven a total of 87 miles since installing it. The last drive was 40 miles, 15 of which were on the highway at 75mph.

I wish I had one of those flexible shaft cameras so I could drain tcase and look in through the fill or drain hole. I'm going to remove the drive shaft and output pinion, put the transmission in gear (and t/c in 2wd) and let it idle to see if oil comes splashing out. If I don't see oil that will mean it's disengaged right?

mine gets hot in the same place when I'm driving extended distances. It's the same on pretty much every XJ i've ridden in.
It's very unlikely it's from the trans or transfer case though. Usually when that area gets hot it's from the exhaust / cat converter. Maybe you loosened up the connection at the cat when you were working on the transfer case?

yea id bet you got heat from the exhaust doing that not the TC, i just installed my SYE on my TC and i can say with assurance there is no way for that tube to fall out of the pump.

Why not just go buy some woodstove insulation board, cut a piece to fit the area of sheet metal (WEAR A MSC SPRAY PAINT/ DUST MASK) next to the exhaust or catalytic converter, screw it on with some sheet metal screws and fender washers and see if that solves the hot hump problem? The exhaust pipe seems like a much greater source of heat than the transfer case, especially if it's 40 degrees outside.
(Did I mention to WEAR AN MSC SPRAY PAINT/ DUST MASK? You don't want that insulation crap in your lungs, trust me.)
