Default How to remove broken tap, LOL!

So, I broke my tap off while doing my hack n tap and they only had a 3/8th tap extractor with 3 flutes instead of 4 so I had to work with what I had, just wanted to post pics for a good laugh, I was angry enough to punch a baby...

You've never worked at a machine shop have you? lol!

If it's too mangled to use a tap extractor then you can use a centerpunch to carefully break the tap into pieces and let them fall out. You're going to have to beat the snot out of it.

I could only find a tap extractor for a 3/8's with a 3 flute within 25 miles so I bought it and used a hammer to beat it on and then turned and it came right out. Its finished and in the jeep nao =P

damn you got lucky, removing broken taps can be a serious pain in the ***.

I just may take you up on that. I finished it and although its ugly it went in well. We will see if any vibes show up when its finished. Trying to find a drive shaft right now, I didnt realize the front shaft in the rear wont work with a manual cherokee.

Try a front from a ZJ with the V8, its longer then the front XJ

Just went down the same path AX15/np231 with my SYE install and rear shaft. I knew the front one wouldn't work, I picked up a front shaft from a V8 ZJ which was 1 inch longer than the stock front shaft from an XJ. I had to stretch it pretty good to work. I would say its at the limit of spline engagement that I want to run. I might have to go down a custom path sooner or later.

What do you mean by the minimum spline engagment? Isnt there just u joints on each side?

Correct. I think my measurement from yoke to yoke was almost 36" I wanna say the ZJ shaft was in the 32" range?

Havnt had any problems with the zj shaft in the rear? Allows you to fully articulate and what not? I dont know why but I thought the slip yoke in the middle couldnt seperate from eachother

I have not been able to use my Jeep yet since I put it on. (Doing a bunch of stuff at once)

The hack and tap or SYE stops the "slip" from occurring on the output shaft of the transfercase and instead makes it happen in the middle of the shaft.



^^^Stole picture from google..But the "Slip" is right about ^ on the drive shaft.

Best bet once you get it all squared away is to measure from yoke to yoke to figure out how long of a drive shaft you need.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I went to the sherwood pick n pull and get a front shaft off a grand cherokee. It is a perfect fit, as in barely long enough perfect fit. I have drove it around and got it up to 80, there are no vibrations what so ever and it feels loads better then it did before, thanks for the help everyone, and now you know it will work for driving around, but I know a tom woods is in the future, hopefully not to soon..
