For the cost of the Tom Woods 242 SYE you honestly get little over a typical hack and tap. Why? Because all you are actually buying is the stock shaft pre hack n tapped already. It's not any form of upgrade like the 231 sye's are. You are simply taking some of the labour out of the task.
I was quite disappointed when I saw what he actually had for $850.

Only thing is, they cheated and removed the case. Part of the fun is a full assault of showering sparks bouncing off the tranny tunnel when cutting!
The second vid has sparks..lol I used these vids to do my H&T.

^ The main difference is how far from the case the yoke end (u-joint) is. The Hack sits like 6" away and Tom Woods sits very close, just like the front output yoke.
My concerns with the Hack was having that heavy double-cardon joint so far away from the transfer case. But it's been 3 years and all is well.

I have a custom seal cap that accomplishes the same thing (cost me $20 the go-jeep seal cap is made by a friend of mine) so the seal cap/seal and a yoke, hack the spline short and done. That's what I was getting at is all, really, as you already stated though ... Not worth it.

Wow, great idea! Will that method work with both long and short tailcones? I have the short one that does not involve seal replacement.

I appreciate the info, ive watched a few of those the last few days, seems pretty straight forward, less intense than the full HD SYE install. I plan on getting the guide and tap. I have some good drill bits and taps, but this gives me an excuse to add to my collection

The bits and tap are high quality but the tap is tapered. This requires drilling the hole longer than the bolt to accommodate the tap. What has happened to a few is, the tap bottoms out in the hole and breaks.

When you buy a tap, also buy a bottoming tap, or, sacrifice the taper tap and grind the taper off after cutting the first few threads. This allows cutting the threads to full depth. Taper taps are just the most common, and meant to make the initial thread.

Little late but I missed the 242 TC my bad yes rather expensive, I see why your using the preferred "Hack & Tap". For it mine was NP231 and I made a good one time buy for a new kit on eBay for $99 shipped.
