Default just got my first XJ need help with lift and tire size!

I'm looking at a 3inch lift ...i think

i was thinking 245/75/R17

i wanted to get bigger rims because my dad is offering to give me his old ones from his jeep that are in very nice condition a lot nicer than my R15's

so basically i need advice about everything

if i went with the 17 inch wheels what tire size should i go with that would fit with no trimming or backspacing, if it would fit at all.(if with the 17" i needed to go to a higher lift please do say so) or is my only option to stick with the 15 inch wheels and if so what size tires?

if u can't tell i'm new to this and don't have a clue what i'm doing

You can use the 17" Wheels. Just tell us the specs of them (Width, Backspacing & Offset). Wheel size will look like this '16x8 with 5.0" Backspacing (+13mm Offset)'. Are they take offs from a JK or JL? The most popular tire size on Cherokees with 17" Wheels is 265-70-17 but you would need at least 3.5" of lift to run them without trimming. Same goes for the 245-75-17 that you mentioned. With 3" of lift you would be better off with a 245-70, 255-65 or 265-65. So basically 3" of lift for 31's and 3.5" of lift for 32's.

for a budget concious guy, some larger SUV come standard with 265/70/16, the first thing these guys want to do is upgrade wheel & tyre size, and they offload their new OEM tyres very cheap. I run them on 2000 Ford Explorer teardrop alloy rims, which have excellent offset/backspacing (and stud pattern) for XJ..look good, and weigh less

Keep in mind you're gonna want to inspect any and all suspension bushing before lifting. Also if you go past the 3 inch mark your gonna be looking at other upgrades to correct vibrations and geometry.

A 31" tire for a 15" or a 18" rim will be the exact same size. A 31" tire is a 31" tire. The only difference is the amount of sidewall you will have on the tire. What you are really going to want to look at is the backspaceing on the rim. Stock backspaceing is 5.25". You will want at least 4.25" of backspacing to clear your lower control arms. Just depends on how far out you want them to stick out. I run 3.75" backspacing on mine. I did however have to trim my bumper end caps for them to fit, 97 Country

Just to throw this out there, JK/JL wheels are 5x5 bolt pattern, and XJ's are 5x4.5, you'll need a wheel spacer/adapter to get them to fit. Jeep patriot, libertys are 5x4.5 bolt pattern and won't need an adapter.

245-70-17 is a 31" x 9.5". That will work fine with 3" of lift. But are you sure those 17" wheels will work for the Cherokee? Have you looked into lug pattern and backspacing?

I know that the wheels are 5x4.5 for the 15inches I have now and the 17inches i’m putting on that also has a bolt pattern of 5x4.5 anything else I should know?

The 17 inch wheels are coming from a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 which is an older ram which used to have the same bolt pattern as the 2001 Cherokee XJ’s I’m 99.9% sure lol

A quick search turned up specs on the wheels your considering as having a bolt pattern of 5X139.7.
https://www.wheel-size.com/size/dodge/ram-1500/2007/

Also depending on whether those wheel are 7" or 8" backspacing could be an issue in that the tires may hit the lower control arms.
