Beam pattern is also more important than mounting location. Factory fogs mount low so they don't just light up the fog in front of you (ever flipped your high beams on in the fog? Bad idea). Their purpose is to light the road and the closer they are to the road, the less fog can be in the middle. You can't go wrong with Hella. I'm thinking since you're upgrading your stock headlights, you'd benefit more from a fog beam pattern (wide to the sides) instead of just doubling your headlight pattern with driving lights. Even if mounted high on your pre-runner, their beam will still be wide and effective, it's just that in a true fog situation there will be more room for fog in between them and the road. If you live on Delmarva or in Western Maryland where fog is TERRIBLE you might want to consider that lol but it's all about whether you want them for a true fog-fighting purpose or not.

I'm excited to see picture results of whatever you end up with, don't leave me hanging lol.

Ive done so much to my jeep - exhaust, sound system, painted valve cover, CAI, painted throttle body, landl bumper, roof racks, wheels, tires (about on my second set), smoked markers and turn signals, herculined quarterpanels, and the list goes on.

Started a build thread and got as far as posting pics of removing my door molding.

So yeah. I'll order the 550's right now, and be sure to post updates. Really curious about how much that little LED light bar is going to do, and if it will be effective hidden beneath the header panel.

Again, thanks for your help. I probably won't make much progress until next weekend due to ship times and my work schedule.

I'll probably spend a good part of my day picking a switch panel and mounting options. Input always appreciated.

will do, once its updated.. its been stagnant for like a year now.

Any input on if LED's require a relay? Ive seen numerous sources that say "no"
as they have such a light draw.

I want to do it right, but can't locate a reasonably priced LED install kit and don't want to buy an additional fog light kit b/c it's overkill.

I bought the 6" led bar and the Hella 550s.

Still need to buy: switch panel (optional), wiring for leds (i am tempted to buy This off ebay, and tube clamps to install fog lights

I bought a fog light wiring kit for the LED light bar.. I've been thinking about how it's only one and once I get the first, I'll wire it in and decide if I need two - The wiring for the second will already be there. I just figured for $90, one light bar wasn't a huge gamble. Everyone in this town has RAZRs and I can craigslist it if I hate it.

The dually's are very durable. That I respect. However, at 300+ per set, they produce about 2600 lumens. The $88 light bar I chose puts out about 2200, so I think durability is a fair trade off, naturally - time will tell. I'm going to see if I can mount it under the header panel (in the gap above bumper) or maybe behind my grill. if I like the results, I'll buy another. I am not sure if the Dually's lumen rating is per unit or pair. They have 6 led's at 20w and the bar I purchased has 12 at 36w. Since they'll be run off a relay and direct to battery, I should be able to maximize output.

I was going to do a switch panel, but I think I'll just put them in the plastic panel beneath the steering wheel. Maybe, I'll just let them dangle until I find a spot I like. Plus, I may buy a tire carrier bumper in the next year. In which case I may have auxillary back up lights and need a third switch. There are some sick racing switch panels for 2+ switches, engine push start, and kill switch.

Here's my shopping tally
6" LED light bar - $88
Universal Fog light Wiring Kit - $17.50
PIAA 2 Piece Aluminum Tube Mount Kit - $40.31 (KC and Rugged Ridge mounts are like $30 for 1, IIRC)
Hella 550 Amber 3x7 Fog Light Kit - $118.98
Total: $264.79, shipping included

I still need to buy a new headlight wiring harness. This was what I was after this weekend. Will order one this week.
The LMC harness is $40.70, shipped. Other than that, I think all I'll need is some conduit to make the install clean. So ~$320 all said and done. If I get another light bar, that will be just over the price of the Dually's and my original intention was $100 fog lights.

If this bores everyone, sorry - I just figured if anyone is looking in the future, this might prove useful.

Rigid's (maker of the Dually) 6" light bar - same output as the fleabay one I purchased, 2160 lumens. is $300. It looks like similar stock with a better lense bolted on.

Oh yeah -- I shop ebay, only US sellers. Amazon's the same gamble on the true product's source. I am a cost conscious guy and don't like to pay markup. When I have more money, someday, I'll put extra coin in the popular 4x4 shop's pockets. For now, I try to cut out the middle man or go for a better deal. When it comes to fabricated parts - naturally, I go straight to the builder as I can't do it myself.

Got my fogs, led light bar, and hoop mounts. Piaa hoop mounts are hideous and I'll probably chalk them up as a 40 dollar loss. Wish I had tabs welded on but behave precious little time to take it to a shop, even for such a small job. Led light bar is pretty stout. I like it so much it may go on the roof. Pics to come. No time off until sunday

Here are some night shots. Finally done. I learned alot about wiring and like the results. The 6" led is bright, I could easily drive without headlights. It will be nice for back roads, campsites, and when remote highways and interstates. I opted to wire it in with a cheapo fog harness, its removable and bolted to my Thule. Also, there's an open spot on the harness if I add another light bar.
Not much else to say, other than I look forward to upgrading my headlight harness. My fog lights put my low beams to shame.
The hella 550s are sweet. They light up outside the road at least 10 feet on either side (nice for avoiding critters and meth heads) and have a sharp cutoff. I cruised the highway, interstate, and town with them and didn't get flashed, so I'll call it a success.
Pretty clean install, might do a second led lightbar up top. The led is basically a flood of light. Its a combo beam so it does spot the center of the lane pretty well.
The white light is ok, I really like the amber fogs. They yellow light really is easier on the eyes. White light is nice but just kinda shines on everything. The yellow light, immediately in front of the jeep should be a nice combo.
I'll post better pics when I can. Thanks to all who offered support/advice.

Ill post pics from behind the lights once I find a suitable spot. I like my wiring clean, so I spent like 5 hours on the project (had to run to the store once and go find a drill big enough for my 1/2" bit).
The Hella switch doesn't illuminate and the cheap harness has a chintzy switch, so I may buy a switch panel. The one for the XJ ashtray spot is cool, but way overpriced. Everything is done except for the switches, which are strung out by my shifter.
