im not a newbie, i've been turning wrenches for a living for 6 years, and for the last 2 years ive been turning wrenches for Porsche. while i may not be familiar with solid rear axles since no european cars use them, i doubt you would know your way around a Gt2 or even a damn Boxster.

I am honestly not saying this to be rude, but gearing is not a simple, read about it, and go and do it kind of thing. It takes experience and feel to get it right. Im firmly believe if you want to do axles, you need someone with experience to show you, at least once, but the more the better.
Since Im sure you are going to do it anyway, which is fine, and I hope works out for you, here is some actual info.
The crush sleeve is only to set pinion preload. This should be readily available info in any search.
The backlash is easy with an 8.25 because of the spanners. But remember that these are also responsible for carrier preload.
Also, remember that anytime you adjust pinion depth, you will change backlash, but it wont really matter as you have to pull the carrier everytime you adjust the pinion.
If you overtorque the crush collar, you need a new one.
If you have to reset the pinion and have already installed the crush sleeve, you need a new one.
They also take 250 ish ftlbs. minimum to start.

Turning wrenches for Porsche doesnt qualify you to regear axles. Maybe your not a newbie, but you are to axles, and being a solid axle makes no difference to installing a gear set. If you have to use the excuse of European cars not using solid axles than you are in over your head.
